i wish you could reiterate what you said because it just isnt making sense.
why does any six speed that makes power get a t56? consider what kind of cars get the t56...
viper
cobra
fbody
gt500
corvette
i guess they make power?
and what do you run? high 11s? got a stall? trans cooler? did i ever say your trans wouldnt last? i said anything past 11s.
i gave my side of the story, which in all fairness is the facts. never said that the 4l60 never lasts, but most dont take the chance. ask alot of your fellow auto drivers, they will tell you the stock trans aint as strong as it should be.
i would love to come to chicago and race you man, that would be a great trip!

they make above cars stick because the mindset is a muscle car has to be stick.
put in a 4l80 is my answer.
yes my car is stalled, shift kit, cooler and tuning. do A4s fall apart, sure, but so do six speeds. i know way more guys who have changed clutches than i do A4s.

i agree.
im talking about the trans, and the clutch i dont consider a part of it if you know what i mean. purely thinking of the t56.
i mentioned 4l80 everytime i typed something, and i agree whole heartedly that that is the best option for street/strip cars.
i dont really buy all the "if it aint a stick it aint a muscle car" because all you have to do is look at the original muscle cars and you know auto 351 mustangs and auto 396 chevelles ruled the road among other things. sure the 4 speed is legendary, but if you told somebody with a 69 goat that if they didnt have a muncie they didnt have a muscle car, they probably would punch you in the face...

Also, a lot of people prefer a stick shift, you can shift EXACTLY when you want to, especially when driving on road courses. Not everyone lives or drives dailey at the drag strip. I had a lot of fun driving US 129, aka The Dragon, on the edge of the Smokies, with my stick shift.

I wasn't going to reply to this, but I'm bored today so here goes:
As far as fast auto's, no I wasn't thinking a stock tranny is going to go 9's. I was thinking built Powerglide or TH400. Granted, I'm no tranny expert, I was just making a generic point in response to the statement that "autos are for wusses".
As far as my Jeep being different, well yeah, of course. Then again, Chrysler trannies certainly aren't known for being bulletproof, at least not since the 727.
And although my Jeep hasn't seen any strip time, it HAS been in water over the bumpers, mud up to the rockers, and over many rocks and steep slopes. So it hasn't exactly lead a pampered life. Also, it been pushing larger than stock tires for the majority of it's life.
I had a M6 car once, I '98 Formula back in '00. I won't argue with the mileage, that thing was great on gas. Averaged 21 around town with a heavy foot, and got 28 on the highway. BUT, I only put 4k miles on it before it needed a clutch (@ 32k miles), and I found it tricky as hell to launch at the strip. And to replace the clutch...at the time I couldn't get stock GM parts, I looked for a month. I ended up going all aftermarket, and it ended up costing over a thousand bucks.
Maybe the previous owner did alot of damage to the clutch, I dunno....but I remember at the time there were LOTS of guys that weren't getting many miles at all out of the stock clutches.
And I also see alot lately about syncros going out on the six speeds. A few of the classified listings I've looked at have mentioned this problem.
Anyway, just my .02.
I'd try another M6 car again if the price was right, but put two otherwise identical cars next to each other and I'd take the A4.
No matter what reasons are stated in this thread, it still comes down to personal prefference and intended use.

My dad let me drive his '68 Ford which was a manual a few times. I know how to do it, but yea I'm not 100% comfortable driving in town. I probably could do it now that I'm older. That thing has to be 100x different than a manual these days though. It seriously takes you 10 seconds to find reverse and the stick is like 2 1/2 feet long.
Sorry dude, I have to disagree and say brunettes.

I originally had an Auto, now I have a Manual. I would have to say it is a lot more fun with a stick.

I don't see why everyone is saying that the automatic is better for the drag strip. Where I come from, if you're driving an auto at the drag strip you're getting made fun of because it takes NO skill to drag race with an auto. Wait for the light and floor it. What is the fun in that? Just save the gas and money modding your car and buy a racing game. THAT would be more fun...
I'm not dissing autos though. I drive a m6 as my current daily driver but I'm starting college soon for autobody repair and plan on getting a a4 as my project car to work on and do custom fiberglass interior/exterior work. It'll then probably become my daily driver and my Camaro will be my weekend/racing car. I just like the feeling of having more control over my car and a a4 can't give me what a m6 can.

not dissing, no skill! and should just buy a video game. come one. when was the last time you saw a funny car witha Manual. every street i go to is differnt in detroit. some say there is advantage with stick for racing then some say its not far racng a A4 with a stick. like said on post 10001 sticks are lots more fun, but when you got $1000 on the race would you rather be more consistent ( knowing what your car will do almost exactly the next race) or have that percentage of missing a gear or short shifting accidently. IMO a A4 with a stall/slicks can whoomp must/any M6.
this is my last post on this thread for a while LOL

but like said on post 10002 there are lots that can really drive a stick and show a4 s whos the man, and i know that the M6 is a nice package and can run good with some things done to it, just like the 4l50 can do wonders when it has some work done to it. i guess its just how far you want to go, budget and preference and skill it all comes down to. AND FUTURE GOALS

Which is great for driving on the street and AutoX/road courses.
If you want a fast drag car....Automatic.
I have said this several times...if I raced ANY more than I do (2-4 times a year) I would be swapping a built auto into mine, along with a nice 4200 stall. Would knock 3-5 tenths off my ET's.
Consistency is key.

now for a road race car the stick is basically key and for drag racing auto is key
