Shifting Speeds

say you're going 65 and you're cruising in 6th. You're exiting the highway you should(now this is exactly the way I do it. Everyone has their own style and this is mine)

1. kinda all at the same time. push the gas about 1/5 the way down to give it a little higher rpm for 5th to catch without jerking from being too high or too low WHILE pushing the clutch at the same time. Shift to 5th and come out of the clutch almost at the same time. It can be done very quickly

say 5th gets you down to 55 and you want to slow down casually

2. Push the gas about 2/5ths way down and floor the clutch.
Shift to 4th and come out of the clutch, maybe give it a little brake depending on how fast you're trying to slow down. Again, there should be no jerking.

3. Say you're down to 45 but you want to slow down quite a bit quicker. Push the gas a little over 1/2 way down to maybe 3/4 and push the clutch to the floor. Your rpms will be even higher and you will shift to 2nd and come out of the clutch RIGHT after.

4. Say you're at like 30 or so. Push the gas about 3/4 way down at the same time push the clutch all the way to the floor. Shift to 1st quickly and come out of the clutch and if you rev matched it good enough it will not jerk. Apply the brakes as necessary and when your rpms approach idle clutch in and put it in neutral.

That's kinda my way of doing it. After reading this and jumping in your car it will not go perfect for the first few tries so don't worry. I had a funny time doing it tonight. Once you get a feel for it you'll get good.

While trying to learn, you do not have to come out of the clutch quickly. Ease out but don't ease out too slowly. Easing out should take maybe 1 1/2 seconds but when you're good it happens like I said, kinda all at the same time.

Oh and it seems like it burns more gas but it doesn't. As long as your foot is not on the pedal then you're not burning gas.(this doesn't count if cruise control is on.) I know that when I down shift my car gets a lot more miles per tank than if I don't. I just say try it and pay attention to your trip on the dash which you can reset every time you fill up.

It saves gas because God said so! It does slow you down nicely too. I have no idea why it saves gas but I know you're not burning it unless your foot is on the loud pedal.

correct me if im wrong, but doesnt higher rpms = more work for the engine? which... wouldnt that result in burning mroe fuel? plus you still use the gas every time u downshift, so wouldnt that use more fuel as opposed to using brakes?

Since I've started doing it I get GREAT gas milage. I used to get like maybe 200 or less miles per tank and now I get like 230 going until the light is about to come on.

hmmm. well hey if it works, then i got no reason to not believe u. shit i dont even own a car yet anyways, so i got nothing to try it on. both of my parents' cars are autos... hows ur mpg??

when you're traveling in 6th at 2500rpm the engine is driving the drive train. when you downshift and let the clutch out, the drivetrain speeds the engine up, therefore, the driving gear becomes the driven gear. drivetrain speeds the engine up which uses less fuel than at a normal idle. you could almost turn the ignition off and the engine would still be driven by the tranny because of the constant velocity. hope this clears it up.

man I don't even know. I go by miles per tank and it depends on what kind of driving I'm doing. City, or Highway. I try to use the highway as much as possible because it requires less brakes, less gas, and I have a bigger chance of getting into a race, (ahem)

I know when I first got it I got like 354-360 miles on a tank from chicago to cairo. In the city I've gotten like 170 which was the worse right after I got the long tubes on. I guess the computer was trying to relearn stuff. The usual High is like 220 for mostly city and some highway driving. I got like 230 with the down shifting though. and thats with me still getting on it every now and then.

Let Me See If I Can Help You.. Well First Gear In My Camaro Does At Least " 50 Mph" In First If You Hit Right At 6000rpm Before Poppin The Rev Limiter.. And Second Does About "70mph" At About 6000rpm.. If You Are Going Through The Turn I Would Drop In Second Or Third.. Since Third Is A Short Gear. The Lowest I Seen First Gear Do Is About 48 To 47mph.. If You Don't Hit It At Exactly 6000 Or 6200rpm

yea man, you should only shift into first if your at a dead stop or going under 20 mph. don't shift from 50 becasue you shit'll get fucked up quick.

Hey Matt, I presume your car has a manual transmission...I think we're looking for the same thing. Hopefully someone has this info.

well i have a 99 m6 SS and before i put my 4:10s in i had 3:42s and 1st gear redlines around 40 i believe and 2nd was around 70-75 and 3rd was 95-100 and 4th was 130 or so. all depending what rpm youre shifting at. i make max power at 5500rpm so that where i shift, but now its way different with 4:10s.
