The original 55 was to save gas- when several states balked, the feds blackmailed them into complying by threatening to withold federal transportaion funds- there are plenty states with long, empty interstates where you could die from boredom going 55- Montana and Texas come to mind....
The states complied, sort of- if you got a ticket for exceeding 55, but not exceeding a reasonable speed, like, say 65 or 70, the ticket was only for excess gas comsuption- yeah, they ticketed you for exceeding 55, but it was more like a wink-

I agree that saving gas, as a whole nation, is a great idea- but I don't know about the feds reaching down into the states and setting local speed limits-

I think Dena sounds pretty cool, and looks nice, but I am 3000 miles away, and happily married- Like her taste in cars, though-
