The current income tax is a “pay as you go” system. That is why federal income taxes are withheld from every paycheck and why individuals/corporations that do not have taxes withheld are required to make quarterly estimated tax payments.
If you are too underpaid (a.k.a. owe) when filing time comes you may be subject to underpayment penalties and interest that may exceed any interest you earned throughout the year.
In order to avoid penalties (safe harbor) you must have paid in the lesser of 100% (110% once you reach a certain amount of income) of your prior year tax or 90% of your current year tax by the end of the year.

Silver- 2005 Toyota Corolla (DD)
I was in a similar situation the first year I got married. I did my taxes online and was getting back something like $4,000....
then added my wife's information and it dropped to $2k
I found out she only had $16 taken out of each paycheck for Federal.

There are too many variables to do a proper calculation:
How much (if any) of his income is capital gains and dividends taxed at favorable rates?
How much (if any) of his income is tax exempt?
Was all of the tax liability his personally or did he combine amounts from his business holdings for effect?
Etc.
The most conservative estimate of his taxable income I can make is assuming that all income is taxed as ordinary rates and that the tax quoted is only Federal income tax is ~4.7 million.
