Definitely not a bad choice. They go boom when you pull the trigger. Very reliable and the accuracy is better than average overall.
The rake angle of the grip has always been a little wrong for me though. It's not bad, I just prefer the more 1911-ish grip. The M&P is a very comfortable grip and it seems to have great, repeatable, pointability. It took me a while to adjust to a Glock for instinctive shooting.

Here is my carry rig. Not a damn thing unsafe about carrying a 1911 in condition 1. There are 3 friggin safeties. You have to disengage the thumb safety, and fully depress the grip safety for a 1911 to fire. Hard to do that by accident. With a Sig even with the hammer dropped all you have to do is pull the trigger and it fires. Not that, that bothers me as I used to carry a sig as well. Sigs are awesome guns but I prefer a 1911. Kimbers are excellent quality guns and they stand behind them. I wouldn't trade this piece for anything other than a high dollar custom 1911.

If you are proficient with your weapon, Condition 1 with a safety is fine.
Obviously, a Sig in Condition 1 isn't as safe.
Since it sounds like the OP was new to guns. Something with a DA/SA would be easier to use. Just pull the trigger and boom.
Under stress, a beginner may forget to take the safety off. I see it all the time at the range.

Kimber is the best way to go
I would get a Kimber SIS. If you can't afford a good gun, then accept the information from the others.

The thing I like about glocks is that they are as advertised originally.
You can schuck one in the chamber... throw it in the ol crik out back... come back months later and fire that sombitch and it will chamber another one. I carry my Glock 30 (.45 ACP.... aka: God's round) with one in the chamber with the utmost in confidence. I have tried in a controlled surrounding to fire this bastard in every concievable manner which could happen accidentally and it just won't pop. When they first came out they claimed that you could throw one from the top of a building with one in the chamber and it will not fire.... I believe it!
No safeties to screw with other than the trigger deal. That said... I do like the 1911's.... they are tried and true, but although I am new to them... I just have yet to develop the confidence in them with one in the chamber that I have with the Glocks.
My input... hope it helps some.
When I was first sold on Glocks, it was a good friend of mine.. who is armed to the teeth... that told me that his "go to gun" or, "If I have to go to war with the world gun" was two Glock 9mm with 4 ready loaded mags that are on call... ready to go. The statement kinda reminded me of the old stand-bys of "If I had to pick a race car driver to prevent the end of the world... it would be Dale Earnhardt" or "If I had to pick a coach to decide the fate of the world... it would be Bobby Knight" kind of thing.
Bold statements to say the least.

I would say go with an ultra cdp, ultra carry, ultra raptor or a pro carry.
I have a full size Custom II that I open carry and a Springfield V10 that I conceal.
A full size 1911 is very concealable but make sure you go with a good holster

Exactly!!! The safety that matters most is the operator. Too many times ego overrides common sense and a beginner tries to start off with a gun designed for advanced shooters. A 1911 is a great weapon, but it has a number of features that demand your full attention. Add a little stress to the equation and things go bad......quickly. Only proficiency will overcome that. For the average shooter, a 1911 isn't the best choice for a carry gun and I say that because MOST shooters aren't committed enough to train with it like they should. For them, a DAO is a better choice.Last edited by jad628; 06-10-2008 at 07:49 AM.
