i will admit that i didn't know this about tires.... if my tire says 44psi max i keep it at about 40psi and have done so since i have owned a car at 16 (17 years)... i have NEVER had an issue with my tires. i may change the way i do things because i'd like to think i'm smart enough to learn but from what i have seen unless there is a defect in the tire i'd say it will not hurt anything.
