Barrel LENGTH has NOTHING to do with choke!!
Choke is at the muzzle ONLY & squeezes the shot column down a bit to give a denser pattern at longer ranges.

OK BB99, did a little research for you: your gun is manufactured by Stevens/Savage and it's a good gun, typically this was a goose gun, but with it being a 20ga with buckhorn sights, it's probably more suited for deer. If you want to shoot slugs, I recommend using Federal "vital-shock" truball rifled slugs.

we are both correct to an extent, myself not near as much as you. they affect each other just not enough that some feel it makes a difference...

i know a 24" barrel can throw out the same pattern and distance of a 34" barrel depending on the choke, etc...

    Barrel length and shot spread

The length of a shotgun barrel does not significantly affect the pattern or spread of the pellets. The pattern is primarily impacted by the type of cartridge fired and the choke, or constriction normally found at the muzzle of a shotgun barrel. Cutting off the end of the barrel will remove the choke, which generally only extends about two inches (about 5 cm) inward from the muzzle. This results in a cylinder bore, which causes the widest spread generally found in shotgun barrels. For an even wider pattern, special "spreader chokes" or "spreader loads" can be used, that are designed to spread the shot further. (See choke for more information on the impact of chokes. See shotgun shell for information on spreader loads.)...

as for the OP's 20ga shotgun. it is not recommended that you shoot a slug through a non-rifled full choke barrel. full choke refers to the length of that specific barrel. that means it will throw a tighter group of pellets farther than if you were using a modified barrel for example. a full choke barrel you would want to use for trap shooting, modified barrel for skeet, and improved barrel for clay pigeons. you base your barrel selection on what your target is. for example i have a Remington 1100 12ga w/a full choke barrel that i only use from trap shooting. if i wanted to use it for skeet shooting the results would not be good. i would have to go out and buy an modified barrel since its shorter to allow the shotguns pellets to spread out over a shorter distance because of the close range you are at when skeet shooting and it weighs less to allow you to swing faster to lead the target...

the threee types are: modified, improved and full choke are the 3 different lengths shotgun barrels come in. i hope this helps you out...

for me personally, the Remington line has worked for me in regards to firearms (either owned or fired), and when i went last year I used a Remington .222 that was not my own. I had looked at the 710 model for quite sometime and also felt that a .270 caliber was a good size in regards to the size of the deer out in west texas. i didnt find it necessary to go with a larger caliber and risk 'taking out' more than needed for a kill.

also, for a smaller, lighter, more compact field rifle, the 710 is extremely accurate and reliable in all weather conditions. for me it was a good fit. plus picking it up for $325 brand new w/scope was an added bonus...

i got one in .270 too and the damn bolt seizes up with any kind of side to side motion i know that one is partially due to the liner thats inside of the receiver and i have this issue with the 2nd round in the magazine jamming when the bring the action forward, any problem like that with yours?
