took my car in to get an oil change, they tell me its done give me the keys. I back it out of the bay and see my check engine light is on and the oil pressure is at 0, so im like oh shit, shut it off quick and pop my hood- they didn't put any oil in it. (luckily i didn't drive more than 10 feet) the guy goes and gets oil puts it in, so we ask what kind he put in and he said it was 20w50, i was like umm no thats not the oil that goes in my car... they tried to convince me it was the better more expensive kind so i pull the book out of my car and it specifically says do not put 20w50 in it. the guy argued with me for a while that it was fine then finally gave in and put the normal oil in it.

I would never trust anyone else to change my oil. Well, I guess I can think of a few people, but they don't work at a quick lube place.

you have to watch the stupid parts places as well. My dad bought a oil filter at the local parts house. The stupid Zit faced kid gave him the wrong one. Well my dad finished up his oil change, started the motor to do the leak check, found the about 4 qts all over the ground. Man he was pissed.

I used to work at a local oil change place and we had a couple of kids that works there that were friends with the owner that managed to blow up THREE engines in one week. The first one they left the oil filter off, and the second two were because they just forgot to put oil into the car. These kids were so strung out on drugs every day that they were lucky to do anything but breathe, and the best part was that they never did anything to them. I have a few people that I trust working on my cars, but it is only for things I can not do in the driveway on my days off.
Now I am working with my nine year old son to make sure that he knows how to work on his own vehicles, and my daughters wil know the same when they are older.

I took my mom's van to get tires once at Wal-Mart and I was waiting in the waiting are. There was a lady in there also that had gotten there right before me to get oil, fluids, etc. While I was waiting, I heard her make numerous phone calls to exhaust shops around town for an exhaust leak. She told them she smelled exhaust fumes coming inside the car. After she made an appointment with the exhaust shop, I stepped out into the service are and I heard all the employees all start talking about a missing oil cap on the Neon, which was her car. One of the managers went inside and looked at the records to see which service guy was doing the oil chages last time her car had been serviced. All of the managers basically threw a major bitch fit at the service guy for leaving the oil cap off last time her car was serviced. When they went back inside they told her that the guy had lost her oil cap and that they were sending someone to buy a new one. Then she said, "Actually, I put more oil in the car since the last time I had it serviced." They were like, "Oh, good." Then they said, "We can either send someone to get the new cap or you can just pick it up yourself and come back for the oil change later." She said, "Well actually I'm sort of in a hurry. I have an appointment with a mechanic." (her "exhasut leak" appointment) The whole time, I was trying to catch her to tell her she could probably cancel her exhaust appointment. Anyways though, she ended up going to get her "exhaust leak" fixed even though it was probably just oil burning on the engine and the guy that got yelled at by every manager there never even got an appology the whole time I was there. I thought it was pretty funny.

I worked at a local oil shop around town here and we had a dude bring in this bad ass wrx for an oil change. Well the pit bitch goes through his routine calling out everything he's done. Top side tech say's "ready oil?" put the oil in, showed the customer the oil level on the stick and they drive away. The next day I hear that the pit bitch drained the tranny and the top side tech double filled the engine with oil. locked up the tranny and ruined all the seals and gaskets in/on the motor. The shop had to pay for everything. Our manager was fired that weekend.

kind of funny, but sad at the same time story.
When I first started wrenching in the early/mid 90's. this older lady, (probably late 70's) pulls up to the front of the shop, blue smoke everywhere out the exhaust, looked like a fog cloud rolling in, engine sputtering and then just locked up as she drove up. Checked the oil and it was all the way up the dipstick, took the oil fill cap off and oil was up to the top of the valve cover.
My boss told her she had waaaay too much oil in it. She then said that her husband had passed away a few months ago, and she remembered him telling her that every time she got gas to "put oil" in too. My manager told her that what he probably said was to "check the oil" every time she got gas.
So this old widow was adding a quart of oil every time she got gas. Felt bad for her.2002 WS6 aka "Mr.Brownstone"

oh, another dumb customer story.
Pull in car to check brakes "making a grinding noise" check it out, then go up to the dumbass and I say "..so who just replaced the brake pads on your car?" he says "uh...no one!" then I say "oh, interesting because it has brand new pads on it and they are in backwards....metal on metal
" I'll put them in the right way for ya" (rolling eyes as I walk off")
oh and then, this dumb chick comes in, "my brakes just started grinding" check it out and the brake pads are so worn down, that it wore all the way to the vents in the rotor!! "just started grinding??? lol

sad thing was, it was a new hyundai accent, ran the factory brakes down so bad, had to buy new rotors and a caliper...cheapest car and can't even afford to do a simple brake job

the one i saw was on a 94 grand cherokee, came into the shop and the brakes were a cunt hair away from being metal to metal. It needed a diff overhaul and new tires.
They only did the diff overhaul, a month later the thing blew up because they had 2 different size tires on it and it was full time 4wd.
Our shop re did the work under warranty (goodwill sort of thing) on the condition that they replace the tires, so we put new tires on... but they still would not do the brakes (which were metal to metal at this point)
3 months later they FINALLY brought it in for brakes and the rotors looked like a ring gear or some shit haha they were worn down into the vents and about half way through the vents as well.
Told the customer about it when he picked it up.... wasn't interested in hearing the story, all he said was "yea, times are tough".

bad rap?
I don't understand why jiffy lube/ quicky lube, etc. always get a bad rap.
It doesn't take a certified mechanic to change your oil and filter. Most guys change their own oil, and what certifications do we have to do it? Experience you say? Well a jiffy lube employees changes probably 20+ cars a day. You or I probably change your oil 3 or 4 times a year. Assuming they work 300 days a year, that is 6000 oil changes. to your 4 -8 (if you have two vehicles). Cut that in half and they still change oil 3000 times a year.
I agree they screw up from time to time, but like any other business they have insurance, and if they screw something up, it gets fixed/ replaced.
But the likelihood of something "catastrophic" happening is very minuscule.
On that same note - A guy I use to work with on my last base (USAF) owned an 04 Mustang GT (brand new at the time)--
He took his car in for its first, or maybe it was its second oil change at the local ford dealership. Guess what!.. They dropped his car off the lift, and Jacked up one whole side of the car. SO MUCH for pimple faced jiffy lube workers being less qualified.
So for me, I have only heard of one horror story from someone that I have met face to face, and it was a problem at a dealership with Certified Ford mechanics.
For the record - I don't change my own oil. I pay 20-25 bucks and let someone else do it, Usually the local tire shop. No complaints yet, and I have been driving for about 13 years or so.
