Yea, atleast there are some people that think outside the box, but most of the time those questions are what is the next number in the sequence lol.

As others have shown, many of these "find the pattern" problems are BS!
IMHO, if anything, they often cater to people that think they know advanced math patterns, equations, etc.
    Still, they often are fun!

As you and bluehawk2000 said, the "simplest" pattern would lead to 46. But, assuming that there is not a typo (IMHO, there most likely is), then I can make two simple cases where 43 would be the correct answer.

Assuming I didn't make some simple typos...

    Answer #1:
    Orig Pattern:
    19(Base), 22(+3), 28(+6), 31(+3), 37(+6), 40(+3)

I see a possible pattern of:
    A) 19, 22(+3), 28(+6), 31(+3), 37(+6),
    B) 40(offset by 3)

    Next in pattern:
    B) 40(offset by 3), 43(+3), 49(+6), 52(+3), 58(+6)
    C) 61(offset by 3), 64(+3), 70(+6) ...

    Answer #2:
    Orig Pattern:
    A)19(Base), 22(+3), 28(+6),
    B)31(offset by 3), 37(+6), 40(+3)

    Next in pattern:
    C)43(offset by 3), 46(+3), 52(+6),
    53(offset by 3), 59(+6), 62(+3)
    65(offset by 3), 68(+3), 74(+6)
    77(offset by 3), 83(+6), 86(+3)
    ...

And, that's without pulling out the image/pattern/radar/etc analysis methods.

My guess is that the Math teacher will just say that there was a typo, and my patterns "aren't in any way correct". Yea, riiight. Uhm, did that teacher spend their Grad School years doing Image Analysis. Or, know how to find a data signal that has less strength than the noise that surrounds it? GPS signals are a great example.

And, as other people have said, it could be a stupid "play with words" and note that the word "would" and the value "64" satisfies the simple +3, +6 pattern.

BTW: Did I mention how these "number pattern" problems are often BS!

ok youre right...we didnt read the question correctly....i automatically assumed they were asking for the next number in the pattern.l

if he extends the pattern, which of the following numbers will he write?

    A. 43
    B. 50
    C. 64
    D. 75

i thought the answer should be 46 but thats not an option. what do you guys think?
As others have said, the question is the key to the answer. It is basically a trick question.

But yea, the answer is C. I would've thought it should've been 46 also.

This is a skill that would never help him, even if he wanted to be a math major one day. (not advisable)

something else that bothers the hell out of me are these new age teaching styles. Zach's just starting math for the most part but the way they teach it is retarded. He's doing some estimation horse shit that makes no sense as far as teaching someone basic math. Something about if you have 24+44 you make it 20+40 and tack on the extra 4's or some shit. Just teach him 24+44 and call it good to go....he's in the 2nd grade for pete's sake. This is why when I go to McDonalds they can't figure out how to give me the correct change back.

Seriously, the kinda stuff they're teaching in grade school is the shit I learned in JR high and HS. That show "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?" makes me feel dumb on a daily basis.

    I will do things kinda like that.... say 29.97 x 3.... I would make it 30 x 3 = 90 and then take 9 off to get 89.91

the problem is that the kids aren't ready to learn that shit yet so it don't "take" so to speak. They can memorize and repeat it but don't retain the information. Same way with spelling......she doesn't want him to "sound out" words to spell them. I flat out told him to ignore her and sound the shit out. End result.....A's in spelling.
