The majority of pickups here are 4x4(1/2, 3/4 or 1 ton), and if they are 2wd, they are not usually 3/4 ton HD - which brings me to this:

I don't think you're comparing apples to apples since your previous post referenced this statement: "I had a 2001 2500HD CC/SWB 2WD 8.1/Allison. Because of family circumstances ( don't ask because it was ridiculous what I was forced to do), I bought an 07 F250SD CC/SWB 4WD 6.0L."

    To be fair, you should be comparing a 4x4 3/4 ton 8.1 HD, to a 4x4 3/4 ton Duramax HD(or a F250 diesel 4x4 for that matter).

4x4 3/4 ton 8.1 HD's do NOT get 13mpg, especially pulling the type of enclosed trailer you've mentioned. If you are LUCKY, you'll get 8 to 9 mpg with the 8.1, compared to 16 or better with a Duramax...........

This isn't even mentioning the aftermarket chips available on the market today that are offered to diesels. You can't honestly tell me that there's a chip on the market for a gasoline engine that even comes close to comparing with the mileage/power efficiencies of a diesel. They don't exist.
Maybe it's not a true apples to apples comparison. But it is certainly my real world comparison.

I readily agree the 2WD vs 4WD will cause some skewed results. But I didn't want to speculate, just deal with personal experience.

It's easy to create "fact" based upon what one reads on the internet. I prefer real world experience. It seems to be more reliable for some reason.

What ever you decide, please post results.

get a gasser 4x4 truck. I own a 97 F-250 4x4 5 speed with a powerstroke motor. I LOVE this truck, but I feel like you have to treat them differently. they can take a ass whoopin, i know that, but general care and maitnence and warm up/ cooldown times are sucky.

youll be much more happy with a gas truck. maitnence costs for diesels suck. go ahead and ask how I know

the new vortec 6.0 or 8.1 chevys make some pretty good power.

Funny how so many diesel owners prefer a gas motor ...

And it's all the little stuff that adds up. Like having to shut the motor off to talk to the teller at the bank or the drive thru. This sux when it 100* in the shade.

The one time I was glad I had a diesel was when I was stopped at a red light, several cars deep. Billy bad-ass pulls up beside me with a booming, thumping stereo. He had his windows down so that everyone could enjoy it. So I crept up till my exhaust was about even with his driver's side window and began power braking. Thick, black, stinking smoke belched out of my exhaust and right into his car. I wanted him to enjoy it.

Enjoying all the debating which is why i posted it. It will probably come down to the best deal when my finances get in order and i'm ready to buy. A buddy just bought a 03 4x4 duramax loaded cc,sb with 127k for 13,500 today so we'll see how he likes it. I will definitely post what i end up with.

yeah, dmaxs are ok trucks i guess. Im a powerstroke fan, and ofcourse, much love for the 12v cummins.

the d-max's are as close to a gasser as you can get. they are quiet, and run pretty well even when they are cold. in the winter make sure to get a grille cover. they need em big time

Not what I hear from people who I personally know that own them... they all love them and will own nothing but diesels.

I've driven a friend 04 cummins/6 speed and its almost as much fun as driving my ta in the summer... but come winter its still going and my rwd car is put away. Doesn't hurt to have an upgraded exhaust and box to raise the boost... I'm already looking for one!

My buddy had an '01 6-speed cummins, he let me drive it when he bought a ram charger and needed to drive it home. It's so much fun driving/shifting those things. They pull like nothing else.

Well I guess owning a diesel is like owning a boat ... every one needs to experience it ... once.

How many 8.1's are out there with over 300,000 miles compared to diesels?

    Yea - that's what I thought.

Ever seen a truck with 300K miles? 1% of folks keep a truck that long.

    Yes, I've seen several.

Also - the OP is looking to purchase a used vehicle - within the price range he's looking at, it will most likely have over 100,000 miles on it from the get-go. The potential for his prospective vehicle to hit 300,000 is much greater than someone that buys a new vehicle, obviously. In any event, that's another reason to go with a diesel - they last longer, hence the higher price upfront.
