If you unhook the battery while it is running it is possible for the alternator to run out of control and overcharge-which on one of these cars could be a disaster.Better to get it running and have it tested somewhere -a lot of places do this for free.If it was cranking at 9 volts -thats too low-but you needed to have a fully charged and known good battery in the system before you can get any kind of reliable and totally accurate test on the charging + starting systems. You would be better off taking the battery out and have it tested somewhere to start with. If it's still good but low on a charge then you would probably have a bad alternator-or loose connections-or loose serpentine belt.In other words it could be a lot of things-you need to check stuff out-start with the battery and go from there.

I have an Idea!
OK HERE YOU GO, take the key for the car and throw it into the ocean. Then get one grenade and put it in glove compartment. Make sure to attach a string to the pin. Stand back and pull the string! There problem solved! Next day call up your insurance company and let them know some carzy man was in your neighborhood last night running around with grenades! I am sure they will believe it and prob start searching for a crazy man with grenades!
P.S I will let the grim reaper know your ready to die!

Or learn how to work on cars and come to the realization that it's not that tuff to fix something like this.

bad alternators more then likely wont ever prevent a car from starting as they alternate current, they dont provide direct current. my guess is the battery is bad or your starter is either shot or had a dead spot. try tapping the starter, when you crank it. obviously you need to enlist the help of a buddy on this.

But a bad alternator can ruin or let the battery discharge previously, preventing the starter from working next time you hit the key.All I'm saying is a simple check will clear up alot of the "mystery" in starting -charging system diagnosis.Sorry to be so blunt before-it was a long day I guess,or I'm a cranky old bas^&rd.
