it's a 50 horse evinrude. When I do get a spark it's a nice strong spark so I don't think it's the stator. It's also both cylinders so I would think that would rule out an ignition coil. It almost has to be something shorting to ground somewhere.

I got a manual in the mail today for it from OMC. It's model number E50TLEOD. '95 50hp evinrude.
I'm gonna go out and start chasing some wires but I have to buy a couple of tools before I go any further with it. I need a peak reading volt meter and spark tester.

I might be getting closer with it. I inspected the trim wires and the trim up wire was chaffed with bare wire showing. It rides right under the rectifier which bolts to the block. There's a good chance that's grounding out but I'm not sure if that'll cause my no spark condition.
I unhooked the trim wires and the boat got spark again. I hooked them back up and the spark went away for a minute but came right back. I then tried holding that chaffe directly onto the rectifier to see if the spark went away but it didn't....still had spark. I'm wondering if that trim wire shorting out is the issue or if me moving all those wires around getting to the trim wires fixed a different short somewhere. I would love to get it to replicate so I could find out if that's the wire or not. I'm not even sure if the trim wire shorting will kill the spark. For what it's worth I've never had issues with the motor trimming up or down.
Either way I think my problem is in that area.

exposed wire is never a good thing.
I just remembered 2 summers ago the 110 horse Johnson outboard on my friends boat had a similar problem and the wiring going to the coil pack under the big engine cover was all corroded and fried from a combination of water getting in because big oring around the cover was cracked to the fact that lots of heat builds up under the cover. so he ended up redneck wire repairing the broken up wire under there and it fixed it. Not saying this is your problem though when you did infact find chafed and broken wire.

Maybe its the pickup? If it was dying after warming up I'd say stator overheating and dying. With the killswitch, the killswitch(at least on boats I've been on) work by grounding out a circuit wich isn;t supposed to be grounded. So that's a great place to check. But yeah, swapping parts out with a friend is the BEST thing to do.
Swap coil, stator, pickup. Evirude, is taht a two stroke? If it is a four stroke, I've seen similar engines have issues like yours when valves were way out of wack.
Intermittent electrical issues are a pain in the ass to track down. Does it have a cdi box on it? If so that might be the issue.
