Ever shoot 30 rounds of 5.56 or 7.62 and touch the barrel? When I bought my first AR-15 many years ago, I burned through 2 mags as fast as I could. Before I reloaded, I rested the gun against my car. It completely melted the bumper cover. Lesson learned.

I wouldn't touch the barrell after 3 rounds, especially on an M4. But the bull barrel variant I have at home actually doesn't get that hot after 30 rounds - better heat dissipation.

When I was in the service, there were modified M4s with heavy barrels that were used in special ops that were a lot tougher. A lot lighter than a SAW.
