Code Readers-----------------
Hello Folks,
I have a Service Engine Light on. The reared engine seal was replaced where the mechanic pulled the engine. It rant fine for a week. Yesterday I punched it on the highway to merge onto ramp and the engine light went on.
At any rate, the light can be countless things of course...... Anyone with any suggestions on which is the best Code Reader for the the 4th Generation 2000 Trans Am? It's just a good idea these days to have a code reader if you have more than one vehicle. Saves time and money. I don't see any threads on here with suggestions on code readers.
Thanks a million!

Matt, not sure why you made this NWS...
any code reader will work as long as its OBDII compliant code reader. you can go to Auto Zone and get the car scanned for free. it will spit out what code(s) you might have. however, it will not clear the codes or the SES light...

NWS------the icon?
What is NWS? I never even gave thought to it ... I just like the icon
.
Yah, I know that you can have the code check at Auto Zone......but I'm interested in having my own reader for conveniencing. I just thought there may be some users on here with suggestions.
Thanks for the advice though,
Matt

NWS means Not Work Safe (nude pics, etc)...
I actually have my own Code Reader that reads all OBDII cars and comes with OBDI cables for Chevy, Ford , Chryster...
I cant remember the name right off hand. only had it for about 2 weeks, but it is a code scanner, reader, code deleter, resets the "check Engine Light", and gives you an Emissions Readiness readings...
if you can give me til this evening I will gladly get back to you with the name of it. it cost me 199.99 at O'Rielly Auto Parts...
if you dont want a code reader/deleter then the price falls off significantlly to around 60-100 bucks...

Your Pricey Reader
Yah man... I'm at work too.
Let me know the exact site you purchased that reader from. $200 is pretty pricey for that reader given the fact that I heard the there are new Compliants for 2007 vehicles.
I saw a few on Ebay for less than $70 that can delete and read, etc.
Let me know about your reader any ways.
Thanks man,
Matthew

Deciphering and Removing Codes
Ah! You bought a bilingual reader hahahah!!! No wonder why they charged you a lot.
Have you used the reader as of yet to clear codes and decipher them? Certain Ebay code readers mentioned about precisely giving you the problem right in the reader. Does yours do that too?
Sorry for asking all this, but I want to play it safe this time in purchasing an item. I purchased my TA a month ago and it had problems and sitting in the shop for the past 1 1/2 weeks... sucks as hell. The warranty has expired and the troubles are on my hands now.
Thanks for the replies man,
Matthew

Yes, I have used the reader to check my 96 Ford Exploder so that I could pass inspection...Its throwing 2 codes for shift solidiods (sp), and was throwing the Check Engine Light. i cleared the codes and let the truck idle for about 20min and then took it to the inspection station and passed...
it gave me the precise codes and explination of what the code was (has an internal OBDII code library. so now its a matter of getting the truck fixed. for shits i hooked it up to my SS and it threw no codes (im tuned very well)...i passed emissions with a H/C/I/E car with no cats...
so picture this...my non-emissions vehicle (ss) passes no questions asked. first time i take the Exploder i fail since i pulled the battery terminal and tried to clear the codes. last friday i pass after driving the Exploder for a week and then just simply clearing the codes, resetting the "CEL" and letting the car idle to bring it back up to emissions readiness status...hahaha

Paying For Itself
Ha ha ah ha!!!
That reader was pretty useful for your Explorer!!! Save yourself some buck there!!!! I didn't know that Texas required Vehicle Smog Check like California.. that's a surprise my friend!!!
Shitttttttt How did you pass with no Cat on that SS? And you didn't even have a code for that? Over here, a person needs to be on the low down with the Smog Tester just to pass without cats.
Well, the emission machine connects to the same plug as the reader, thus, everything you see on the reader will be seen on that machine. Seems like your reader is close to paying for iteself.
Good going bro!

I just picked up one of these.

It is more than you need just for 4th gen f-body, but I wanted to have a good scanner around that could work on most obdII and newer cars, read general and manufacturer specific codes, let you clear codes, turn off the MIL light, as well as having description in the device for the codes.

Sucks Helllllll.
Thank you for the info. I'll take a look at the ones you guys suggested and make a purchase today. There have been times where the light comes up and I have brought my Saturn to the dealership just to find out that their diagnostic has to do with the Gas Cap..... sucks like hell, even though it's not a Gas Cap problem for they didn't do shit except remove the Engine Light.
Thanks buddy!

You got It Buddy!
Thanks for the 411 good buddy! I will pick up one today. Time and money will be save from the purchase.
Hey, I purchase many things from Ebay despite the shipping. It really does come out much more inexpensive....... the worse part is a return will probably not be in order if it's not what you expected.
2 months ago, I purchase a Gas Catcher for my Murray lawn mower...... it didn't fit and I had to modify the fitting.
This is the reason why I ask you guy which Reader works. Thanks again for sharing your Code Reader experiences. I will keep it in mind when needing a Smog Check.
Good holiday weekend Buster!

Anytime I see a code....I take it to Advance or AutoZone.
Eventually I will invest in HPTuners, but until then, I can't see dropping the money on a basic reader.
