K&n Or Paper Filter?
The k&n flows more, but lets more by. The paper traps more, but flows less. Which is better?

only reason i use k&n is because it is reusable and therefore it has paid for itself years ago.

Paper $7.50.....throwaway.....flows well.....traps more dirt
K&N $50....reusable.....flows better.....allows dirt into engine
K&N pays for itself after about 90,000 miles
New Engine $6,000
Money saved by using K&N???
I don't think there is any savings but I could be wrong

um...paper allows dirt into the engine. a lil dirt doesnt destroy the engine. plus as long as you "recharge" your filter it will pick up almost as much as a paper but flow over 5x better. not to mention if your in a area that isn't a desert you'll be fine. there are pros and cons for both filters.

Like I said....I could be wrong
Yes, a "little" dirt is okay, but what do you gain by allowing more dirt in??
I had the K&N & threw it out the first time I saw it not sealing in my lid
( back when they had sealing issues )
BTW.....the dirtier it is the more efficient the K&N will be at filtering
(up to a point)

I guess there is more area to contain more dirt. K&N says that on the paperwork that comes with it saying that it works best when it has some debris in it.

I have used K&N and other cotton guaze oiled filters for years. Never did have to replace an engine.

I saw some research before that shows the K+N type filters will continue to flow better dirty when the paper filters have started clogging up and restricting. If you use paper then change it often. Use the K+N types and let them alone and it will work for a lot longer period of time. It would appear that the K+N types will pass some super small dirt particles that the paper type willl not. I've never had this blow up any of my vehicles engines. I have a dunebuggy that I run in sand and high dust areas. I have run paper filters on this engine-but change it every couple days of running (they will be completely clogged otherwise after a couple days). Most offroad vehicles that I've seen run a K+N type filter though. You make the call...
Wanted to add in closing that the Fram Air Hog is a comparable filter at about half the cost. I've got one in my car right now.

Neither one.
AEM Dryflow or Amsoil synthetic filters....kick the shit out of KN or paper.

Thats not a constant. There is maybe 1 fucked up engine from a K&N (usually its the MAF, not the engine) to every 50 engines that run fine with it.
Sarge, Ive seen you point that shit out a lot before. Got any links or some plain info would be good! They cotton? Reusable? Dyno charts? That sort of thing.

K&N gives you no gains tho. Been proven over and over. Not worth any extra dirt. May as well use no filter at all if you follow this logic.

I thought K&Ns DO give you more HP when more and more mods are added? Especially FI. Bottom line, you can clean a K&N. You cant clean a paper.

Rbob:
Did you get yours 2nd hand from a pick'n pull, with holes all over it? I've had mine for just over 6 years and have never had any problems with contaminates entering into my engine.
Sure I have to clean it about 3 times a year. But after I've cleaned it thoroughly, it's ALMOST as good as new and performs like a champ.

My point was/is that I cannot justify any savings using paper vs. K&N by potentially ruining my engine.
You guys run premium fuel and shun Fram oil filters because of possible engine damage, yet run a filter that allows larger pieces of dirt pass through.
Makes no sense to me.
It's an opinion on my part.
