im sorry but secondgearscratch must swoop in to protect the mighty manual transmission.
i wont argue that a stalled tranny is a good thing, and i have never had or driven a car with a shift kit so i cant and wont comment on that. having said that....
i think that its crap to assume that autos win races. and if they do, its in no thanks to you. driving a manual down the strip is something skillful and is achieved through alot of practice, timing, and knowing your car. having a manual is driving....this is because you are involved and you predict the outcome. autos will run the same time and again. but a manual can produce anything from 13.50s to 12.90s given the right combo of launch, tire pressure, shift points and alittle experimentation. wheres the fun in riding in the car?
the launch is crucial, but if you nail it its something you achieved. and quick shifting with the ample supply of power will bury any hopes of a stalled auto.
i have no problems with autos. i repeat, i have no problems with autos.
this isnt about impressing high schoolers, its about cars....to each their own.
but dont try to demean a manual by saying most drivers cant do it right.
atleast they're driving...

Good post.
Its retarded to say that "manuals impress high school kids". Sorry, but I like to actually drive my car, not have the car drive me around. Anyone can push the gas pedal and steer. It takes skill to pilot a manual transmission equipped car in a race and run a good time.
I would never buy a sports car or muscle car with an automatic. I would be bored to death.

again, well said.
autos can be deadly. the built 4l80s and high stall 4l60s, but i cant accept that i myself cant shift faster than a built auto. no one will be able to convince me.
i agree about the sports/muscle car thing alot. i wonder how the f1 paddle shifters perform in the italian cars. not the manumatic tap shift options, the f1 paddles. has anyone ever driven one????
and whats up wes?

hehheh both hands on the wheel when you race is proven better than one, especially on curvy roads.

well, it depends how you look at it, curving with 2 hands on the wheel gives one more options in turning a the wheel... driving M6 and cornering is like driving with a cell phone in your hand. if that's fun well ok.

If your a competent manual transmission driver with both cars stock or same mods the manual will win. True there are a lot of people that don't know how to drive a M6 to it's full potential and that is all driver error. The manual car will still be the faster car with all else equal if driven properly. I guess it's like the dumb asses on the sport bikes that can't ride and loose to cars that should be 4 seconds slower than them. They just give the true manual transmission drivers a bad rep. If I built a drag strip only car I would get an auto, but on the street it's all manual! In the seldom event of running into a car that is a challenge on the street it's not worth being bored the rest of time just plunking down one foot and not mashing the gears around with out the ability of getting the left leg some exercise. IMO auto's are for - (never mind, that would start to much shit) Their may be a few other situations too. Otherwise a sports/muscle car should be a manual. I find it interesting that most of the high end special cars are all manuals also.

Nah, a cell is different that distracts you. Shifting puts you more in tune with the car. You can feel the trans and motor do its work in the shifter. You should already have your gear change planned going into the turn anyway and are still able to have both hands on the wheel most of the time. It's not even 1/2 a second that you need to take one hand off the wheel if you don't want to. I guess that depends on how competent the driver is anyway.

I think we all appreciate you opinion, but it still doesn't matter because whoever wins the race on strip or street gets a kick out of it. it could be an A4 or M6 depending on the dumbass driving it and who screws up first. to say something is boring is of course your opinion, just like mine saying M6 are too busy and unnecessary when an A4 stalled can so a better job. my opinion.

you are too busy thinking about what gear you should be in, and just because you can downshift and rev up the engine as you please doesn't mean you are in tune with the engine, it's about efficiency and shifting right after power curve. and the computer does that very nicely for you.

what it boils down to is who has the capacity to drive better A4 built up and stalled or built up M6? that's up for the driver to get it done. we can sit all day here saying this and that is better or more boring but, who are we to say...

That's only the case with the people that are not competent with the manuals. I know on approach of a corner what gear I should be in and don't even think about it. Once the auto's are properly tuned to down shift when they should and go to the next gear when they should do a good job, but not tunned they usually shift at the worst time.
