Keep your day job and start developing a client base on the side. Keep the info off your boss' PC. If they find out they'll walk you out before you can take your files with you. I had a sharp young woman working for me who developed web sites on the side. made more money working for her self than through the company. helath insurance kept her there longer than she wanted to be there, but she ended up going to to law school. Kept her income stream by farming out the work to another young women in India...
The down side she mentioned was the hours. But, once you see enough work in front of you to support your self at level better than where your at, tell them to blow it out there a s s and move on.
