The cheapest way to go is to buy a used aluminium one from a LS1.
I have seen them in the for sale section here and on LS1Tech for as little as $50!
Just buy new u-joints and maybe get it balanced and you are ready to go.

How big of an operation is it, something that I can do or does it need to be lifted?

Mine vibrates pretty good at around 100+ MPH Could the steel drive shaft just be rebalanced?

jack it up in the rear. undo 4 nuts on the straps that hold it in place. you might have to pry the drive shaft out , if its stuck. then lube the outside of the new yoke and gently slide it in the tail housing of the tranny . after that bolt it back up to the rearend and your done. buy new straps , try not to use the factory ones. they have been on there so long, its just a good idea to replace them.

I run the Spohn extreme duty driveshaft. I've only tested it to 140 (ran out of road and nerve, although not necessarily in that order), but it didn't vibrate. Just an alternative.

I agree. Avoid dealers at all cost. Chevey dealers will jack you any chance they get. If they give you the drive shaft for free, they'll charge you $50 for test driving it. haha oh ya, plus tax.
The next car I buy definately ain't going to be a GM or Ford. Lexus, Honda or Acura possibly. Unless I get a vette, but even then it won't be new. (God willing of course)

if its a recall, then yes, No charge. bulletins are a different story.

doesnt matter how old the car is and you can be the 500th owner as long as the recall hasent be performed on the car its still open to do a free check call your local GM dealer and give them either your full VIN or the last 8 of your VIN

Back in the day GM would honour this recall and rplace the stock steel driveshaft with a 1LE if the dealer crossed all the T's and dotted all the i's.
The last one done for free as a 'warrenty issue' was in late 1997 and that is why I posted about the best/cheapest fix is a used alum. LS1 driveshaft. I upgraded my u-joints to heavy duty ones (Lakewood I believe) and it has worked flawlessly for me.
