Performance Chips????
I was wondering if anyone had any advice on these performance chips that give up to 20, 40 horsepower for 5 or 6 bucks. Has to be a scam of some sort or ruin your engine. Just wondering want everyone knows???

Scam. LSX engine PCMs do not have removeable chips wherein you can install a so-called "performance" chip. The old style PCMs used such removeable chips which merely contained one unchangeable set of timing and fuel table references or "instructions" for short. You replaced it with a "performance" chip which was another unchageable set of instructions.
With ours, you can create your own custom set of instructions and load these onto the PCM. You can edit and re-edit until you get the tune you want.
Perhaps you are meaning those little resistors that you plug into the IAT sensor to trick the PCM into advancing the timing some? Those are a waste of time, even if they are only a few bucks.
If it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is.

I have a couple questions about these pcm's
Is this what is known as having your engine reflashed? what kind of gains do they produce? is it worth it for someone who doesnt intend on spending much time at the track?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, tuning or flashing your PCM can be very beneficial. Even if you do not go to the track, tuning can extract the most power out of you setup and if done properly (with in mod limits) can even pass emissions requirement (if applicable). Even on a factory stock vehicle, a tune can make a world of difference.
Either get yourself a tuning suite, such as HPTuners, or get tune by a local and reputable person.

The performance chip -sometimes called a timing tricker--is just a resistor placed inline on a wire to the IAT (intake air temp) sensor that tricks the ECM into thinking it is cold outside (usually set at 57*) to give the engine 2-5 more degrees timing---I cant remember the resistor # --but i went to radio shack and you could buy 5 of them for .99 cents--Does it work ?? on a cool day it will add timing and make a little more power 5-10 HP maybe--but on a hot day--it will cause detonation and the ECM will pull timing out via the knock retard system--actually taking power away !!!!--I would say --waste of money--like the others said--better off to save your $$$ and get a full tune
