lid airbox filter problem (added ws6 lower box)

ok i switched out my lower airbox on my z28 with the ws6 lower box i have fram or accel filter (neither fit) they fit fine in my z28 lower box and i have an mti lid foe a z28...my problem is that the stock z28 filter is too small and the lid fits ok but not great like it did on the z28 lower box. i added rubber shims under the bottom of the filter to make it fit better but without the shims the filter moves around in there alot and there is about 1/2 in. extra space on all sides of it and if i didn't shim under the filter the filter will NOT come close to sealing to the lid....so basicly is there a difference between the ws6 / z28 filters. also are there different lids too? i thought the lids the same too? it fits fine where the tabs slide in and it clips down fine but it seals like crap around the edges it doesn't fit into a groove like on my stock airbox.

i have also done a search through an auto parts store and they don't recognize a difference between the 2 since it only asked if it was a 5.7L engine. they didn't show a ws6 option

    also K&N lists this :
    pn# 07-33-2118 K&N Air Filter, 1998-2002 LS1 & 3.8L V6 Camaro/Firebird (Including SS and WS6) $52.99

BUT the filter/box sizes are NOT the same the ws6 filter needs to be bigger and taller

if i were you go to autozone..buy a K&N air filter for the 98-02 Trans am Camaros...It comes with a rubber seal that goes around your air lid....It shouldnt matter if there isnt a Ws6 option...Its the same on a Stock TA vs the WS6....If that doesnt work then i dont know what the deal is..it was the same size as my airbox just a bigger opening...Also do you have a tray that sits inside of the lower airbox? i do in my car...that the filter sits in..

NO TRAY that came with the ws6 airbox it just looks like it needs a slightly larger filter but i see what u mean about a tray, maybe i can get the one out of my stock airbox..but i don't think it comes out, the filter fits fine in my stock airbox ..and in the ws6 lower i have it flops around and i really didn't wanna have to go get a k&n just for the seal also if i put the seal on my lid i don't think it will fit into the groove on the front of the box...i dunno i will check into it more and if anyone has any ideas please post them feedback is good. i'm also working on seriously enlarging the hole in the front and inside of my ultra z hood ....port matching so to speak....also sealing it alot better than it is now. i think i might try a firmer version of memory foam which will kind of contour to the opening/area around it

what happened to the tray that holds the filter from the stock lower support? you have to use that to hold the filter in the lower support

You may also have issues with the top of your lid hitting the bottom of your hood. The WS6 lower box raises the whole lid assembly to get the wider opening. Why change? The size of the air box opening on Z's, SS's, T/A's and Firehawks is not an air flow restriction.

the tray should come out....I know it does because mine just pulls right out of my airbox and if i didnt have that tray then yes my air filter would move around...

ok i checked and problem solved thanks everyone.
it's sealed ok but i need to do a much better job in the area where the hood lines up with the airbox.. my airbox was raised before but the ws6 airbox is sooo much better also i think i am gonna work on enlarging the opening on the hood as well for that big gulp of air. just hope i don't eat any birds since it is descreened right now as well
