I've never heard such screeching before. He is pretty small and I'm assuming calling for his mama.

The owls are another reason I don't let my little dogs outside at night. One of those owls could scoop them up rather easy. We can lots of Coyote out here too.

    I'm ready for another dog...
could be a screech owl too.....even full grown they're little boogers.

screech owls don't really "screech" though they make a trill sound more than anything.....not sure what all types of owl you guys have out there. Barred owls are noisey as hell though and barn owls screech a lot. Barred owls during mating season in the fall sound like a young girl screaming bloody murder. If you've never heard one it'll scare the shit out of you. We have a ton of barred owls. I sit in my stand after dark sometimes to listen to them if there's more than one group going at it. They're very territorial and have no problems letting other owls know about it. By far my favorite owl.

That's sort of like what we've got in our trees out here The one making all the noise was a little one. Like a 1/4 of the size of the adults we're used to seeing around here.

I'll post a picture I took a few years ago.

that's a barn owl.....they screech and make tons of noise too. I got the shit bit out of me once when I was a little kid by one of those. We built a bird box and put in the tree out front. My older brother sent me up the tree to check it. I stuck my arm in the hole and said " I feel something furrrrrrrrrrr..........ahhhhh......it bit me." Big honking barn owl flew out after I got my arm out of the hole. My brother made a good point that day.....he said "at least it wasn't a snake." He's a glass half full type I guess.

So we get home sorta late last night after running around. On the way into the sub-division I see 4 raccoons and thought of this thread. Park the Durango and as we were getting out we all heard an owl. I was like no, it's just because I had this thread on my mind, then my daughter asks did we hear the owl? So this is the first time she's heard one not on tv and we stayed to listen some more. So we located it by it's calls. It then took off flying around and then dove down on something. Just as my daughter asks what did it get, it's prey starts screaming....turn out it choose a kitten for dinner.....My daughter was pissed..she likes cats, I can't stand them....Ppl in the neighborhood love letting them free range, can't stand it because they love to use my wife's flower beds for the litter box and then I have to hear my wife complain about it. Told her that, that's an example of the cycle of life so not to be too upset.

So this morning I see our neighbor picking up the carcass before the school kids show up for the bus stop in front of our houses. She was not amused.

Owl's are bad ass. What kind of owl was it? I've seen them out just before dark cruising around for dinner gliding through the trees. Hard not to be impressed with them. Their hearing and eye sight combo is second to none.

not sure it was hidden in the tree and didn't get a good look. If I see it in the day time I'll try to snap a pic.

their calls are pretty specific.......I've spent quite a bit of time looking up owl sounds so I know what they are when I hear them. I typically only hear 3. Barred, great horned, or screech. I've heard a couple barn owls but not near as much as the other 3. For years I thought a screech owl was something else because they don't really sound like owls.

Those clips were interesting. None sound very familiar. My owls are pretty much silent for the most part. If it were not for the owl shit, you wouldn't even know they were perched up in the trees All except that little one the other day, he was noisy, but haven't heard a peep out of him since. But, one of our neighbors let loose 4 freaking doves a few years back and they live in our trees and are quite noisy. Daily. I have pictures of them too.

Sound close to the Horned Owl.

It is also 1 of 8 species here, so the odds are high it's one.

I'm going to see if it comes back tonight.

I always love birds of prey. Raptors, Hawks, Eagles and Owls..

Chances are he's perched up in a tree near by. I just went outside and took a few more pictures of the one in the front yard. He has his eyes closed but I know that he knows when I'm there.

if he's always there it may be time to set up a camera and go get one of those mouse cat toys and record it attacking that thing.....with the right camera angle it could be bad ass and you could probably sell the video to someone.

He has been there for years (assuming it's the same one and a he). He does leave for a few months here and there, but he always comes back to the same spot on the same tree. It's actually my neighbors tree but only about 10' or so from my fence. Across the street there are no houses, just open hills with lots of quail, rodents and rabbits and such. And of course, Coyotes. When they start going off at the top of the hill, it's like a chain reaction and all the dogs in the neighborhood start going off too. We have lots of dogs around here

I'd actually like for the owl to nab those doves...

get a peregrine falcon for those......twice I've seen falcons take birds out of the air. I've also seen a cooper's hawk take a bird. It always leaves me just a tad bit sad. I was in my stand 2 years ago and this wave of finch were coming through working the trees tweeting and what not. I was sitting and watching them when out of nowhere a coopers hawk crashes down on one of them about 15' out in front of my stand on a limb. I was looking right at it and had a front row seat. The hawk had it in it's talons on one foot. It hopped around a couple times getting it positioned. The finch let out one little "chirp" and the hawk took off with it. While being the coolest thing I'd ever seen it was a little sad. One of the falcon kills I saw was downtown Columbus. It took a pigeon out of the air. The other was while on break at work. It came zipping in and took a small bird flying from one tree to another. They're fast as hell.
