$4000 to get 450 to 500 hp (HELP)
I have a 2002 trans am ls1. I got dynatech Headers already. What can I do to get 450 to 500 hp. I know I can get the trick flow heads for 3200 but will be over $4000 by the time I get all the additional upgrades because I am thinking that I will have to change intake, fuel pump, injectors, and of course I would have to get a tune. Any suggestions to achieving this? I will consider any idea!

Are you doing all the work yourself?

Boost gets you laid, unless your name is Jon.

I'm not doing that but thanks. Even if I don't achieve my goal then I would like to know what would get me the closest. Besides the installation of whatever I get will be free from a mech in the family.

A camshaft adds about 35-40rwhp depending on the size/specs of the cam.

Very true. When I say cam only it means headers and intake as well.. But the only internal mod is the cam with no power adder. Well and maybe better springs but they do not add hp. Again I can be WAY off on this. Oh and a short belt (track only mod for the most part)...
Okay edit here... 390 to 410 for cam only ls1's... My mistake and glad to admit it.. Listen to 35th...Last edited by Z28Thunder; 09-27-2014 at 09:13 PM.

Completely stock, our cars make around 300rwhp. A4's are in the high 200's. Also depends on which DYNO you use.
My 02 Camaro SS with a Blackwing lid, Kooks 1-7/8 headers, Kooks 3" y-pipe and full exhaust made 330rwhp and 342rwtq on a Mustang Dyno after EPP tuned it. That was through a Moser 9" so I lost some there. With a stock 10 bolt I probably would have been at 345rwhp/360rwtq.
Add a street able camshaft to my setup and I'm at 385rwhp. A good ways still from 450.
I don't know...people here barely hit 450rwhp with H/C/I setups.

With a big cam I've seen 410-420rwhp with bolt on's and no aftermarket heads but it's not a cam you'd want to drive every day of the week...the old t-rex cam was notorious for making big numbers but it hit really hard. Pretty much all the cam makers make one that is comparable to its specs.

OP - this is what you need, and PLEASE do not get stuck on hitting a particular #. Also remember, HP/TQ doesn't mean much without being able to put it to the ground effectively ....suspension, tires, clutch if you're a M6, transmission, etc.
- Camshaft
- Upgraded oil pump
- Hardened push rods
- Upgraded springs
- Upgraded timing chain
- Fuel pump
- Bigger injectors
- Port/polished heads with miscellaneous installation hardware.
- Full exhaust (cat back + headers). Not sure if you have an exhaust too.
- Air lid
- Everything installed - if you are taking it somewhere this will be a big expense.
- Tune
The LS6 intake will also be a bottleneck when you get to those power levels; 450+.
If you bargain shop, you can probably make a good 430-440rwhp using your existing LS6 intake and getting a camshaft in the 228 range with some 243 heads that are ported and polished with your budget. It will be close I think. You'll definitely need larger injectors. Your stock injectors are 28lb-hr and cannot support those power levels. They'll max out beforehand.
If you're strictly looking for more power as least expensive as possible, a nitrous kit would be the best bet. A lot of people don't care for filling up a bottle time and time again. Me being one of those and why I went forced induction.

I agree and I have too, but 450 is a far stretch. You're still talking another 30-40rwhp which is a lot. I'm sure if you tune the car to its ragged edge and put the biggest camshaft you can find for a drag car it can be done. Not very practical for most people who enjoy driving their car on the street though.

Can't say I have much experience there as I'm a stick, but 4000 is a tad big. Hopefully your camshaft compliments the stall size you chose . Install those heads already.

I would just save a little more and put a 408 or 402 in there as that opens the doors for more power with being less extreme. Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with being extreme with a car build, that is what I am, but it is not for everyone.

Isn't a new 402ci LS2 like 7,500-10,000+ depending on if it's a short block or long block? That would be saving a lot more lol.

Yes Texas Speed has a short block 408 for $3900 or a long block for $6600. Good deal if you ask me I have way more than that into mine but then again my build is not your standard stroker build, high compression does require some more expensive components lol.

True, but then you still have to add in the cost of a fuel pump, injectors, tune, etc and that racks up a lot of money quickly. We both know if you think your build will cost "X", add about 50% more to that for shit you forgot or things that come up lol.

That is very true but my point still stands. My point was that it would be much easier to achieve his goal with a 408 than the stock cubed ls1 and it would have a lot better drivability on a daily basis. In addition it is capable of more power if he wants more later. Now if he wants extreme then it is certainly doable on a ls1.
