Hatch Lift Support Strength
When new, are these strong enough to lift the TA hatch automatically when release button is pushed?

No.
Probably so that you are the one who opens the hatch and hits something above, and now you can't sue GM about it.

are you talking about it opening on its own when the button is pushed or are you referring to it opening enough so that that latch actually releases...? Most people's complaint is that the spring is not physically strong enough to lift the hatch enough so that the latch releases...most people have to press the hatch release button or the remote a couple of times to get the hatch open.
if you want it to pop up quick when the button is pressed, do this mod...its quick and easy and works pretty well.

Saw this sitting in the parking lot home depot. They sell a four pack for five dollars. 5/8 by 2 and a half inches. There are two longer ones I am sure I won't use.

My question arose because I read in that install university link, the comment at the end says
"Does your hatch want to fly up to outer space when commanded to open? Great!!".
Also on my 3rd gen GTA - after switching from urethane to lighter fiberglass spoiler, half the time when I push the release button the hatch opens all the way on its own (kind of slow like power-operated liftgate on new SUVs).
On my 01 TA, the lift supports are somewhat weak but still functional.
If new ones will make it open on its own or with just a little finger boost I will change them now.

I won't be able to use them all anyways. Half are too long.

Factory Third-Gens' with power hatch releases were designed to open about 3-4 inches and after an amount of time if not pulled open my a person (in case of accidental activation) close on its own. If yours opened all the way open, odds are it had an aftermarket set of hatch shocks that were valved wrong (maybe for a rear hatch with a rear wiper).
