im really considering a LS3, but another option a buddy threw out was a porche trans, bc apparently ls adapters are made for them and would easily hold up, but thanks for all the ideas and info guys, much appreciated, ill keep you updated

First thing to upgrade on ANY Fiero except for an '88 model is the suspension.
The suspensions are basically a Chevette since everything came from the same parts bin.
In typical GM fashion, for 1988 they put a real suspension under the car, got it darn near terrific, then stopped building it.
All the go-fast engines are great in the Fiero but if you don't upgrade the suspension you'll have the equivalent of a more modern V8 Vega.
I personally lean toward the 3800SC. I rode in one with just a pulley swap and it was nuts. Gotta love the instant hit of massive torque.
My neighbor used to work for a dealership and two of the techs there had engine swapped Fieros, one a carbed 383 and the other the 3800SC. The 3800SC would murder the 383.
Some Sugarplums to dream about...
And HERE is a pretty detailed page about the 3800 swap.

This is a smart post, a 25 year old project car is going to need some parts replaced as it is. Suspension is going to be one of them. And I think the 3800 s/c is awesome as well. There is a guy at the local shows who has one with a 350 and one with a 3800 s/c. He says he likes the 38000 a lot more although the 350 he has is probably only pushing out highs 200s for hp.

doing some looking and a H/C SC 3800 does sound like a nasty lil combo, and fairly cheap for what your going to get out of it
