2013 Shelby Gets it's official HP rating from Ford
Looks like ford just added another nail to the coffin for the ZL1 662hp, and 631lb up from what they were initially expecting 650hp, and 600ft lbs.
2013 Ford Shelby GT500 certified at 662 hp and 631 pound-feet [UPDATE]

Sheez. These so-called pony cars are getting crazy! That's about 50% more power than my 8 year old Cobra!

The current GT500 is $50k+, so more than that I would say... Still less than a Corvette ZR1 so it can have bragging rights for now, but of course the Corvette will still outperform it...

With GM killing its performance dept I don't see much improvement after the ZL1 comes out. The current majority share holder (current admin) is making GM focus on "green" vehicles. I'm surprise they haven't kill Corvette off. I know, I know it's GMs flagship.
I never thought that the auto industry would force another Pinto (Chevy Volt) onto the public but I see I was wrong.
I'm kinda glad Ford is still in the performance business for the average person. Grant it < $51k price tag is quite high, it is still possible to get without signing a kidney, liver away to own.Last edited by SMWS6TA; 04-27-2012 at 11:50 AM.

both cars are fat pigs... the hps numbers are impressive but they are still fat pigs... if they both weighed in 1,000lbs less then my eye brow would raise a bit...

So if they weighed in at 1,000 lbs less the stang would be 2900lbs and the camaro would be 3,000 lbs... less than a corvette and far less than a f-body. Really these cars are only 300-400ish more than a optioned out ls1 car but they have 300more hp which more than makes up for the difference. That is like driving around with a fat friend and I would race with a fat friend in my car if he added 300hp just by getting in.

Agreed the gt500 comes in at 3850 pretty heavily optioned. Even though the weight is up there think about it at 3850 the gt500 has a HP/wt of 5.8:1 to put that into perspective a C6 Z06 is about 6.5:1... Needless to say this thing should move especially with its new suspension to hopefully fix the older gt500's launching issues. I see high 120's trap stock and 10's with dr's or at the very most small bolt ons... Its going to murder the zl1 at the track

The increased weight along with increased horsepower creates a bottleneck.

I'm going to call it now - high 11's on stock rubber AT BEST.
Traction my friends...1000hp wouldn't help. 500hp was plenty for this car and the extra 162hp is going to do very little in the quarter. Above 100mph this car should be pretty wicked, but that's good for nothing more than bragging rights.
It's very cool that Ford has a motor that gets 24mpg while outputting 662hp, but I think there's going to be alot of disappointment in this car because of the insane hype created around it.

what increased weight? it weighs the same as the 11-12 models and still comes in 300lbs less than the zl1. 82hp more and 300lbs less the gt500 is gonna trump the zl1. I love the camaro and all but i have to credit where its due. i think it will have atouch time putting all that power to the ground but a new launch control system, and the fact that ford has completely redone the suspension to make it hook tells me it will be a mid to low 11sec car on stock rubber. and easy 10's with slicks... the zl1 cant even break out of the 12's stock and its only trapping 119 :/

Not really. Because the Mustangs are faster than their competing Camaros? The Mustang is all Ford has as a fun car. They have to put everything they got into it. GM still has the corvette, and even a new GT500 cant touch it. What about HD trucks? The new Duramax is raping the powerstroke badly, and it's a better truck underneath that engine as well. How about the luxury divisions. Do we really even need to compare Lincoln to Cadillac? lol About the only other area I can see where Ford is beating GM is mid-level 1/2 ton truck engines. The ecoboost and 5.0 liter truck engine are substantially better than the 5.3 from a power standpoint.
All that said, the new GT500 is definitely an impressive car. Kudos to Ford.Last edited by 5.0THIS; 04-27-2012 at 02:05 PM.

Silver & Blue- 02 Camaro SS, 04 GTO
The new SRT Viper is due out in a couple of months also. 640+HP and it weighs only 3400 lbs. That should compete with the ZL1 and GT500 but will be slower then the Vette. Price tag is 97,500.00

Actually it would be asking alot. New cars are getting heavier and heavier. It is largely due to federal crash and safety standards. The only way to get these cars' weight down in through the use of more exotic and expensive materials. It isnt going to happen in a new camaro. Not to mention the fact that a new camaro comes with alot more features than your 13 year old transam. Bigger brakes, wheels and tires, IRS, supercharger and all related cooling equipment... it all adds weight.

I really like what Ford is doing with the GT500. I luv the looks and performance and the fact its assembled here in the US unlike the Camaro and Challenger. Talked to a guy yesterday who had a 2011 GT500, boy did he get ripped off by the Dealer although I didn't have the heart to tell him. Guy has $750 a month car payment for 6 years=54k, he admitted he had poor credit and was paying 11 or 12 percent interest on the loan. Plus he traded in his 03 terminator with 50k miles. Talk about a fool, he should have sold his stang outright and used the money to put down on the GT500. He probably is thinking Obama will bail him out if the need arrises.
