New Diff
So its time for me to get rid of my locker, as a daily driver its driving me nuts. I have a moser 9" axle fyi. Does anyone out there have a detroit truetrac or the wavetrac installed on there car and can tell me some of the mannerisims? does it drive like a stock posi? does it make the horrible sounds of a locker in turns? Also are the tolerances tight so there is no clunking?

I have the truetrac in my Moser 9". I only have about 300 miles on mine but it works just like the stock posi and so far I'm happy with it. Mine doesn't make any sounds while I'm turning or clunk. The wavetrac is supposed to be a better unit if you can afford it but for DD its probably overkill.

Got a wavetrac, drives like stock. Main reason I got it was for the 35 splines and lifetime warranty

I have a moser 9" Detroit Locker with 31-spline axles in a 98 WS6. Ran with 4.11 Richmond gears for 10 years. It was impossible to quieten the whine enough to take on a trip. I've switched out the 4.11's for a set of 4.56's by Motion a couple of months ago. It is still too loud to drive in comfort. A couple of weeks ago, I installed a loudmouth 1 catback in hopes of nuetralizing the whine from the rearend. It didn't work. Now I have an obnoxious exhaust noise and a loud rearend. My understanding is that Moser isn't the only company that customizes the Ford 9-inch rearend. As for myself, I will never again buy anything with the Moser name on it.

Not to pick Bill, but the OP was asking about the carrier. Not whether Moser is a good brand. I have one and have no complaints.
That said, I run a TruTrac in my 9" as well. Ran one in the stock 10 bolt too. It's a great carrier. Drives like stock, no cluncking noises, and holds up to all the abuse I can throw at it. In the stock 10 bolt, I broke the gears, not the carrier, after upgrading to the TruTrac. Three times. I'd recommend one.

Possibly. Gear whine is normally indicative of an improper setup of the gears - ie. backlash, shims, ect.. I have encounted carriers that will not allow for the gears to stay properly setup. It is possible that your locker is faulty if the noise has remained through gear changes, and the gears were properly setup. Once the wear pattern is set, the gears will continue to whine. I would also inspect the bearings to ensure they are good and not worn.

The recent set of gears were set up by a Moser specialist. I witnessed the setup. All the bearings were replaced with new. Everything was replaced except the Detroit Locker. The mesh pattern was PERFECT. My next attempt for a road-able rearend will be to replace that detroit locker. It'll be a winter project. Without your input, I never would have suspected my bullit-proof locker. Thanks.

If Moser set it up, it will whine
Once it's whining, changing the carrier won't help. You'll need to start with a fresh set of gears. I would also suggest dumping the 3rd member housing if it's cast by moser, and go with a Strange cast 3rd member.Last edited by Firebirdjones; 08-30-2011 at 09:07 AM.

I assume you are talking about the 9 inch. In the past I never had an issue with it. But it wouldn't surprise me if Moser changed the bolt pattern since they are casting their own 3rd members. Just another one of their gimmicks.
Strange uses the same factory bolt pattern as all 9 inch fords used since the beginning of time, no hokey pokey stuff going on there.

My gears whine as well but I was always told that that was because the gears were built for strength not quietness. So much for paying extra to have Moser set them up I suppose.

Well there is some truth to that. Different brand gears have different heat treating processes, or changes in the way the gears are cut, some for strength, others are made cheaper etc...
Richmond for instance makes a stronger gear with a different heat treating process, but it's actually a "softer" gear for drag racing to take high shock loads. It's not recommended for the street (although I have done it) because they have a high rate of wear (softer metal).
Their street gears go through a different heat treat process for a harder finish, better wear characteristics for high mileage use. This is the gear sets I prefer to use for a street/strip car and I've had good luck with them in 10 second cars without failure. I've had a set in my 4100 lbs. chevelle now since 1989 running 1.5 60 foot times, and it's also been street driven throughout this time.
Even though this gear is harder, I've never had it make any noise at all, nor have I had an issue with others cars.
Now there are also gears out there by companies like Motive that claim to have a quieter gear. I've used them, most recently in a 9 inch setup I did for my neighbor last year. It's been a nice quiet gear for a year now and it setup nicely with no issues.
Moser likes to use these gears in their setups (or they used to) and their stuff always came out noisy. Go figure... For what is supposed to be a quieter gear I've seen it come out both ways. I personally prefer not to use Motive myself because I feel any gear that advertises quieter operation via a different heat treat process or the way the gears are cut,,,,sounds like an inferior gear set to me. I much rather prefer the tried and true Richmond gears, they have never made noise for me if the setup is right, and they haven't let me down. Plus Richmond has backed up their gearsets in times when I had issues and always sent a new set to me. Turned out not to be the gear set fault just so you know.
I don't know if other gearset manufactures would have done this in todays market.
Yukon makes a decent set of gears that I've also setup with good success as far as noise goes. Zoom was another one many years ago that was popular.

I was running Richmond 4.11's in my 9". At 60+ mph in 6th gear it was louder than my open cutout. I've had 4.56 motive's for the last 6 weeks. It is also uncomfortably loud. You didn't mention what gear ratio you are running in your setup. Obviously, the larger ratios will produce proportionately louder gear noise.

I'm actually running a 4.11 and a 3.91 in 2 9 inchers. I have 4.10's and 4.88's in a pair of 12 bolts. But I've setup more than I can count for other people as well.
I've read or have seen many complaints from either rearend. They seem to vary. I stay away from Moser all together nowadays. Prefer OEM or Strange/Currie.
