I had to replace both of the passenger side O2s from when my old motor shit the bed. When the valve punched a hole in piston #4, raw fuel was dumped and fouled out the old sensors. I have a Delco upstream sensor and I just put in a Denso downstream sensor. I cleared the code afterward and today the CEL popped up again. But the car is smooth and doesn't cough.

Backing plate is between the axle and the brake dust cover. The photo you're showing is just the dust cover. Photo below shows the backing plate between the two.

I didn't even drive my car anywhere today but I started it up in the garage to check if the SES light still stayed on constantly while the car is in operation, and of course it did.
It's the weirdest thing, the car idle's perfect, revs smoothly etc., but I did notice a weird fume coming from under it for some reason though. Smells sort of like it's running rich or something, not really too sure if it's related to my problem though, the car is probably in need of an annual tune up. So many different variables, I'm just at a lost. I need to get down to the auto parts store so I can get a code.

Yup, see my car has the CEL light on cause of my O2 sensor on the passenger side. Its on beacuse I have an exhaust leak by the header and I refuse to fix it again till I buy heads and a cam, but that triggers my O2. Though my car runs fine and doesn't stutter or anything and still runs down the strip like a champ its probably just running a little rich.
