no... the technology and energy needed to make the distance that they would travel... i highly doubt there would be any failures of equipment...

oh c'mon, did you ever watch ANY of star wars or star trek? there were failures all the time! christ, it seems the more technical you make something the more prone to failure it is ( look at the LT1 optispark :P ) i have a very hard time thinking that just because the technology is extremely advanced that means there is no more failures....

looks like in his book he uses mathematics and physics that we currently understand... saying the flying saucers in the movie independence day would exert a 450lb per sq in pressure... he assumes they use technology near what ours is...

the worst problem is that we want to believe and forget about common sense... we wouldn't travel X amount of light years and just show up and been seen by an alien race that we'd like to study... we'd destroy thier beliefs, morals, etc etc... their society would crumble and more wars would probably start as a result...

you can't project OUR common sense on an alien same as you can't project human feelings to a dog or cat. just does not work. we have NO idea what an alien civilization THOUSANDS of years ahead of us would do or wouldn't do.

anything is possible is the way i view things. if you want to rule things out because you think they need to follow common sense then you are a bit closed minded IMHO. they COULD be a race of technologicly advanced retards like in galaxy quest for all we know.
