I dont care how many times he might have taken that car out, theres just something to be said for years of experience that you just dont have when you are that age. For every 10 teens there are that are gonna come out there and say "my first car was a v8 and i was fine" theres double that amount that crashed it. You need to worry about driving normally when you are a new driver, not fucking performance.
But my first car was a V8 and I was fine.

Well, it was a Pontiac Bonneville with a 305. Topped out at about 105. And now that I think about it, I did almost total it within a year.

bluehawk..how old were you when you got your t/a ? i am under the impression that any sport orientated car ..v6 v4 or v8 in the hands of an irresponsible kid will end bad. You very well could have done the same thing..the 3800 is no slouch..those kids would be in the same spot if they had a v6 bird or any other sports orientated car

i drove the z alot with my permit and my mom beside me and occasoionally, i mean occaisionally 5 times a year drove it when i was 16 and 17. i have grown up around racing we own many camaros, i understand the power and how easily you can lose it, now that im 18 i drive it whenever i want and thats still very rare, i hate putting miles on it. There are a lot of stupid ass teens out there but that doesnt mean all of them do not know how to drive or understand power.

Last thing I'd ever do is give a 17 year old kid the keys to any Vette..

Especially when recently they were likely riding a peddle bike for primary transportation..

The only thing I don't like is that the media seems to center in on young peoples driving habbits..

I have seen TONS of "adults" whom can't keep their car on the road either...

Yes but auto accidents are the number 1 cause of death in teens year after year. That's likely why it gets the media attention. And it's why I wouldn't give my 16/17 year old a v8 as well. I want to know he has more than a few weeks/months of experience under his belt.

And my first car was a little tomato red 1984 Toyota Tercel! I've come a long way, baby!

IDK, those cars crumple like a 2010 popcan even at low speeds. Bet that was 50mph TOPS when they hit the tree.

I got my ws6 at 18, and the reason I bought it was when I was 16 my friend who was 14 at the time took me out in his dads lt1 z28 with a M6.

I was 20 years old when I got my t/a, I got it when I come home on leave from Iraq. But the v6 firebird that I had for 4 years before my brother totaled it while he was texting and driving. I admit that the v6 was plenty of power for my age but, it was a slouch it had 150k on the clock lol. I am not going to say I didn't do stupid stuff but the car wouldn't even break loose or do a one wheel burnout lol.

My first car was a 93 sentra pos and my kid will get the same type of pos for their first car. You can't appreciate it unless you had to earn it.

My first car was a 1982 camaro that My dad and i built a 383 for. Never wrecked it never hurt anybody with it! there is a difference between the brat that gets the sports cars and the teens who respect the power and the car. All of my friends had muscle cars. none of us hurt anyone. BUT as usual a few people of a certain group do something stupid and the rest get that bad rap. There is a difference between pride and spoiled.

I didn't see anything about seatbelts. In this case if they weren't wearing them it's probably why they survived. That is a messed up wreck.

i've seen a one wheel peel v6 bird that went backwards into a ditch (on a couple mile straight road), up the embankment and through a barbed wire fence on a dry summer night, among other hilarious scenarios. Doubling the power sure doesn't help though

quarter turn of slack in the steering, almost functional brakes, rock hard tires with the tread on one half gone from the slack front suspension (rotated), no sway bars and worn shocks. My c10 was fun before I worked on it.. Passengers shitting their pants when you take a turn at a semi decent clip was priceless

Ma has a 3800 with 219,XXX miles......gets about 27mpg computer but when I REALLY checked it, it got about 25mpg. My first F-Body was a 305 and I snapped the timing chain after about 6 months
