Already broke my new ride

Tensioner should be in today. Took the belt off last night. Never messed with a power steering pump before. Should I be able to turn the pully be hand easily? And should it move back and forth (forwards and backwards) about a full inch? I think the pump is gone.

You should be able to rotate it freely but i dont think it should slide in ad out sounds like you may have broken the shaft

My friend was doing donuts in his 00 Camaro SS and broke the power steering pully. Snapped it clean off. Our cars have under powered steering pumps and they wear out if abused like that.

I think there was a guy on here named BlackSS01 or BLKSS01 and he had a turnone pump on his. He just raved about it. They also featured his car in GMHTP, and di a review on the pump as well. Same thing happened to my car, sorry to hear it.

Replaced the tensioner over the weekend and still no power steering. Didn't think that would fix it, but it needed to be done and I was hoping. Guess I need to order a new pump. I think before I take the power steering pump off I'm going to take the alternator off, to keep from getting any more fluid in it and to clean it.

You can always wrap it in plastic to protect it from a fluid bath.

Good idea. But when I bought the car there was a small leak, and when I drove it home without power steering it burped some out of the top. So I'm sure the alt needs a good cleaning. Is the Alt a pita to get off?

Shouldn't be as long as you can get the car up in the air a bit. I've never had to remove ours.

I think I'm going to remove the alt. and then see if I can find where the leak is so I can fix that when I replace the pump.

I'm still waiting to hear back from PSC. I've read on here some where that you can ship them yours and they will rebuild it like the Turn Ones. I got a call back from Turn One. Theirs is $235 plus $65 if you want their pully. (if I remember right)

ive done donuts in all my birds and never had an steering issue...but then i never cranked the wheel all the way until it stops....hmmm.

I know I already had a small leak and the steering just didn't feel right before it went out. I think I had a problem and the donuts just finished it up.

I pulled the alt. and the ps pump off over the weekend. Before I pulled the pump off I wanted to see just how far the pully would slide forward. Well, it pulled completly off, the shaft was broke. Good news it made it a lot easier getting the pump off. Also I found where the orginal leak was. The o-ring on the high preasure side was almost completly gone. I'm sending the pump off today to PSC to have it rebuilt. For $100 they are going to rebuild and do some boring to make it better than stock.

Now I just need to clean the alt. and flush the ps lines and rack before it comes back. Any tips would be helpful.

I don't know how quick PSC is, but I'm hoping to be able to clean everything this weekend and put it back together weekend after next.

lol thanks the one thing i hate about these pumps is to get the rear pump bolt off you either need to remove the pulley or get some type of twisted wrench behind the pump to undo the bolt. If i ever need to do mine ill be drilling a hole in my pulley to get a socket through it or get a gto pulley which is the same pulley but it already has the access hole. Nice design job on the fbody gm lol.

TurnOne has a good looking pully for $65 (I think that price is right) and it looks like you would have acess to the bolt.

If you use a puller to get the pully off, how do you get it back on?

couple different ways you could do it. heat the pulley in the overn at about 200 degrees for 30 minutes and it should just slip on then tighten the bolt. you coould take a chance with stripping the threads and pull it on with the bolt or get a piece of threaded rod and thread it all the way into the pump then sit the pulley on the shaft and just draw it on with a nut on the threaded rod then replace the rod with the bolt.

i prefer the first method, works well

Pump came in yesterday. Of course I have family in from out of town. They are leaving sometime Saturday. Looks like I'll be putting a pump on Saturday night.

How many qt.s to fill everything back up?
