04 Cobra 'vert - M6 mysti- 02 WS6 coupe - A4 red
Define 'long'... Didn't the Firebird show up just a couple of years after the Mustang? Not so long that it had a long, loyal, established fan base I would think. Back then it was the same as in recent times, the Mustang was less powerful and less costly, thus the secretary buying power kept sales higher for a long time...
Now that the new Mustangs and Camaros are directly competing and the specs are much more similar between them, and since the average secretary and teenager won't be able to afford Mustangs now it'll be interesting to see how the sales fall. Ford may have to drop the power and cost again...

Man that doesn't surprise me, and I kind of figured the Camaro was actually outselling the Mustang. The build-up and release of the 5th gen was such a hyped up and well-known process amongst the public, it seemed like a whole lot of people really liked this car and wanted to buy one. I'm sure the Mustang's are going to catch up again in the near future with the new 5.0/V6 options though.

Even when the camaro did come out in late 66 as a 67 model it still couldnt outsell the mustang even though it sold over 200,000 cars in a year. And to think none of us would have these cars if it was for Iacocca he came up with the idea for the mustang in 62 and it took 2 years for ford to agree to make it because they didnt think it would sell they only gave it a one yr contract and about 5k units.... 20,000 mustangs sold in the first week of april 64 and it sold over 1 million cars by 66 a record that still stands today so I guess in a way we have to thank ford without them we may not have the fbody. I have 66 stang and i gotta say the style is timeless.
