vats disables the starter so I'd probably do that first...... you can get resistors at radio shack or any local electronics store. Just follow the instructions in that thread. It'll take you about 30 minutes or so to do and cost ~$5. Ohm your key, buy the appropriate resistors, install them on the module side of the wiring, and you should be good to go. I believe the last page has a good picture of how me and pajeff or someone wired our resistors in there. Cut the 2 white wires with the orange shielding and tape/solder your resistors across those wires and plug it back in.

This may not be the problem but when my MAP sensor went out the car would start and then die just like you are describing. Just a thought if it isn't the starter, the vats or the pump.

Could that be the problem to??
Right now I think it's the VATS. I'll try that first.

1) check the pressure at the fuelrail. it's located on the driver's side of the fuelrail. take off the plastic cap, and use a small flathead screw driver on the valve stem. do it slowly, because if you have pressure at the rails, it will shoot out. lay out some rags so you dont get fuel all over the engine bay.
2) get another person to turn the car on (do not crank). with you outside the car at the rear check to see if you can hear the fuel pump charging to pressuize the system (bout 3 seconds of hearing it whine). if you hear it whine then you have no issues with the pump. go back to the fuelrail and check if you have pressure again. if you do, then you know your pump, fuel filter, and lines are good.
3) try this procedure and see if it works. like Orion said, it could be your VATS. read this through a couple of times to make sure you understand the process.

Being a believer in starting at the simplest stuff first, is it possible your battery is just toast? Lights, radio etc. draw a tiny fraction of the amps required to start the car. Also, the alternator on your car will not energize without a solid 12v signal from the battery, which would explain why it won't run even push starting it.

The car thinks its being stolen, and the check engine light flashes thats why he knows its a Vehicle Anti Theft System problem. Its very common in almost all OBDII GM vehicles. Its very intermittent. Sometimes you can wait 15min and try again, if you need to get the car home. I always bought a new key at the GM dealer when I came across it and that would fix it...
Thats before I saw that right up on bypassing the resistor

most of the time on these cars it ends up being the wires in the key cylinder....they just wear down over time and don't read well. There are different steps and levels to vats and I don't know all of them. I only know that there are basically just a few things the car will do. Some won't start at all, some will start after 4 minutes, and some will start/drive fine with the security light on all the time. Usually it's only a matter of time before it won't start at all. Vats interupts the starter and fuel pump to keep the car from starting. A solid lit or flashing security light is 100% an issue with vats.

I will probabaly catch hell for this
I have done this hundreds of times literally, because in like 30 seconds. you know if its ignition wiring or not.
I am assuming you don't have a voltmeter of any sort...
Go under your car and touch the starter solenoid wires together or the posts, the red ones, you will get some sparks and your engine will crank, that means the starter solenoid is not getting its jumper volts (ignition system problem most likely VATS) use a peice of metal, THEY ARE HOT so don't hit a ground I.E. any other metal on your car with your metal object LOL
EDIT; my dumbass didn't see all the posts, if your sold on vats... don't do this... if your not do this and if the engine cranks you should be sold on vats.Last edited by Jay37; 12-17-2010 at 03:23 PM.
