I can only tell you what I've learned from exhaust dumped at the rearend.

For most places, years back when certified safety car inspections were required in Cincinnati (in the 70's) They checked for lights, signals, horns, etc.... They required at the very least that the exhaust needed to reach the rearend housing. Back then it was common to install headers on muscle cars and some thrush or cherry bomb header mufflers bolted right to the collectors and then leave it at that.
For fear of fumes this was deemed illegal. It had to reach the rearend. That was really the only stipulation back then on exhaust.

Nowadays, with all this sniffer testing and what not, the shops require a tailpipe that is easily accessible for testing. Dumping at the rearend does not fall under that catagory. Because of that, it's pretty common now for everyone to request that tailpipes be installed on the cars, some even make it a law.
Bottom line is,,,,if you live in an area that has sniff testing, and you have a car new enough that requires sniff testing, then more than likely you'll need tailpipes on the car, otherwise they won't even look at it.

dumped exhaust is illegal in alot of places for passenger cars, not for trucks though. I live in arlington and have had a dumped Y@ the axle for about 6months now and haven't had any problems. I've got hook ups at inspections though so I don't have to worry about that nonsense

If you have big money lying around (think tax refund) you might want to check out the new Kooks system.

only issue with bassani's is that its made for stock exhaust manifolds, but with some modifications it can be made to fit with lt's....kooks is straight bolt on. does that warrant the $1600 IMO hell no!

I'm pretty sure those are extra pipes on the Bassani,,,,that are simply not used for a header application. In any event it's simply removing pipe, easy to do and definately not a reason to shy away from it.
