That is a good story. Too bad more don't end that way, instead of '...and he was a useless bastard all the days of his life...'

I wish I had a story like yours - I had no choice but to terminate the person. At least with your story you were able to get some gratification that you had actually helped someone do better.

When in public, there are times I feel I am the only one who remembers these sayings...

    Think before you speak
    Actions speak louder than words
Do unto others as you would like to have done unto you
    Always be a gentleman/lady
    Be considerate of others
    Be firm yet fair
    Use independent thinking
    Don't take advantage of others

And 2 different things I notice.

The main one the big one. PATIENCE. It seems to be lost. One of the most essential traits I can think of. The world seems to have become a world of instant gratification.

The other is just an observation. I tend to open the door, hold it open etc for anyone. It is interesting to see who says thank you. The people that do always get a you're welcome right back..

I did not have a landline at home, and I did not get another cell phone for about a year and a half! I only had the office phone at work. And lemme tell you, it was freaking fantastic! The only reason I finally gave in and bought another cell phone was because I couldn't take anymore mother guilt. "What if there's an emergency and I can't get a hold of you..." or "I never get to talk to you because you're busy at work and you have no phone at home..." Bah...

Good times though. It proved that you really don't need an electronic leash to live. Civilization got along fine for 5,000 years without instant communication...
I pretty much need to have a cell phone for my job (the radio isn't appropriate for every situation) and since I live over 2000 miles from my nearest relative or any of my close friends, the phone is literally my only means of communication with those people. When I only lived half an hour or forty-five minutes from them, sure, I would just go hang out for a couple hours. Phones have allowed me to move across the country for several years for an unbeatable job opportunity without severing my relationships with the friends and family I grew up with. Otherwise, I agree that everybody is too dependant on immediate gratification and silly attempts to make every moment of their life as public as possible. I don't even want to start with how much I despise shows like Jersey Shore and the people who model their lifestyles after them.

Believe me. I STILL say there would be a few suicides if that show were to be taken off.

I can't stand any of those shows. When I watch real-life TV I watch it to learn something, or to see something crazy or really interesting, so that pretty much limits my surfing to HD Theater, Discovery, National Geographic, and HI. Sometimes I'll watch some crime drama to break it up a little bit. I certainly don't flip on the boob tube to watch other people have personal problems with one another. If I wanted to hear people bitching at each other, I'd start a fight with my wife.

I actually snickered a bit myself when I typed it. But seriously, how can people sit around and watch the same people party and bitch at other for hours on end? I'd much prefer to watch guys build a bad car or bike, or get dropped off in the middle of nowhere and left to fend for themselves, or go through an intense special-operations training academy. Sure there's always a bit of personal drama in all of it, but at least it isn't the main attraction.

I admit I have very little patience. I spent my childhood watching a ton of TV and early adulthood online. Sitting around patiently working on things with my hands might have produced a different me.

I might watch that, but only if they were alone. I get a headache watching them bicker with each other. My wife and her friend watch that shit, and Bad Girls Club and whatever the other tool shows that are on. They'll sit there and watch these bitches argue and complain about how this character or that character is giving them a headache. Then turn it off!!! Anyway, I didn't mean to threadjack with my disgust for the 'put cameras in a house full of people and follow their lives' shows, but that stuff definitely can't be helping our society in any way.

I see superseding generations as having ever-increasing advantages that the previous ones did not. It's up to the individual to use those advantages or ignore them. I grew up with the World Book. Nowadays, a Google search will give you more info in one second than I could find in a day. Sports nutrition and weight training. Even the cars! Just imagine having an LS1 back in the 80's.

What I don't see are huge numbers of records being set. If the exact same situation was faced by NFL players of different eras, I doubt we would see a significant number of Hall-of-Famers being put to shame. As a matter-of-fact, I truly feel the toughness of the average player has went down, not up.

But there are exceptions. I just don't think that - as a whole - younger generations put their advantages to good use.

Now concerning manners? Down the tubes, no question.
