I adress folks with sir or ma'am and get asked if I was a lab experiment or I served in the military.

I don't know, I think it is more who you surround yourself with and how much you are affected by your surroundings. More and more youth these days seem so much like chameleons. They do whatever their friends do. I'm 24, my brother is 19, and my other brother is 17. I'm law enforcement and the only trouble I have ever been associated with is driving fast (ironic, huh?) and no matter who I hung around I never picked up their nasty habits, bad attitudes, or moronic tendencies, while my younger brother has gotten in trouble for drinking, speeding, he constantly disrespects my mom, was always sneaking around and getting into to stuff and getting in her face like she did something wrong. It seems like much of this was due to the type of people he hung around with, who weren't that much crazier than the people I spent my time with. However, my youngest brother stays completely out of trouble, is (usually) quite respectful, has been offered full-ride scholarships to several Ivy League schools, and appears as though he will be a great contributing member of society. And this is just a small example, my family is far from being a drastic situation.

On the average, it does seem like society at large is getting worse and worse as time goes by.

By the way, I completely agree on the comment about nobody calling anybody anymore. The youngest people I can usually get a hold of with a phone call (outside of the other guys I work with) are my parents. But it gets worse: recently even texts are starting to go unanswered, and it seems like the only way anybody wants to communicate now is through facebook. Wtf? I'm not screwing around trying to message people on facebook on my phone, and I certainly am not spending my whole day on my PC. Seems like a step backward from texting and phone calls, if you ask me.

This is a sympton of the laziness of our society. Why call/textmy friends one at a time to tell them about my wonderful life when I can post one facebook message to ALL my friends at once...

They say that kids these days don't like to use the phone. (I read that in an article.) Also, there are at least two books by a woman that claim that kids are mostly socialized by their peers, probably more when there's no stay-at-home caretaker and the youths are online so much. However, for a naturally reclusive person like me, peer influence wasn't much. The one clearly fairly responsible Generation Y relative of mine also seems to be an introvert. Unfortunately, there are more and more extraverts, which goes back to the point about which people become parents.

i don't blame t.v specifically, but it is a contributor. the vast majority of my peers act as much as they can like the most popular idiots they see on mtv. gaga and lil wayne unfortunatly seem to be the at the top of this idiocracy.

I hate talking on the phone. I view the phone like you guys view facebook. If you want to talk to me then take the time to drop by the house and we'll shoot the shit here over a beer. The last thing I want to do is walk around my own house with a phone to my ear. I could easily do without phones altogether and it wouldn't bother me at all.

This is a true story. My girlfriend at the time pissed me off so bad one day that I threw my cell phone out the window of my car while I was driving down the interstate. Seeing it crash and shatter into a thousand pieces in my mirror was very therapeutic.

I did not have a landline at home, and I did not get another cell phone for about a year and a half! I only had the office phone at work. And lemme tell you, it was freaking fantastic! The only reason I finally gave in and bought another cell phone was because I couldn't take anymore mother guilt. "What if there's an emergency and I can't get a hold of you..." or "I never get to talk to you because you're busy at work and you have no phone at home..." Bah...

Good times though. It proved that you really don't need an electronic leash to live. Civilization got along fine for 5,000 years without instant communication...

My wife and brother are a decade younger than me and my wife's sister is 20 years younger than I am.

There are definite differences in the generations and how we relate to other people.

I think the lack of "thank you", "please", and common courtesy is fairly common for people in the 15-25 age range of all generations. As much as I tried to be courteous when I was young it always seemed like a pain in the butt to write thank you letters (for example), but as I got older that type of courtesy became a way to remember how kind or nice someone was to me and the act of being respectful became easier.

However, I do notice the expectations of my sister in law, 20 years younger than me, in terms of employment, saving for the future, and general life expectations, seem to be far more reliant upon big government and other people and I have found this fairly common in her age group (30-35).

I was brought up to believe nobody was going to take care of me except myself. She was brought up to believe that company retirement plans, social security, and medicare would take care of her.

In my opinion we need to get back to the self-reliance model and become more tolerant of other people. We also need to spend less than we earn, take responsibility for our own retirement plans, and not have more children than we can support.

Yea and...

When I was 18 my options were simple... My choices were either college or move out, get a job, and support myself. Not that my parents wouldn't have helped financially, but those were my choices because at age 18 I was expected (and required) to be an adult at least in my ability to do my best to make intelligent life choices and work towards positive goals.

Today many people in their 20s still live at home with their parents and the four years in college and graduate plan has been replaced by the five or six year plan...

Basically we now allow our children to remain children for significantly longer than past generations and as such the typical teenager disrespect goes on for much longer than it did in past generations.
