Yeah I got a pair of wal-mart boots two years ago. Because they were cheap, and I wanted something to wear around the muddy pits up until I put on racing boots.(which make you walk like forest gump swinging leg braces)
Only ever wore them like 45min at a time but holy fuck they were uncomfortable. The part above the toes on the boots were practically wore through in no time at all.

They are awesome boots. Look into them if you ever get a chance. I loved my oakley's but they didn't last for me in rocky terrain.(Tread wore away quickly and the thread was busting from all the weight and pressure on the stitching going down steep grades. You know the feet slamming into the ground while you're leaning way back trying to keep your balance with a ton of weight find of hills. They were certainly comfortable though. I've worn Merrel's too. They have a good product. I've worn Lowa's. They reminded me of the Timberland's I had in school. The Asolo's were the best thing I've put on my feet in combat. I wear a 80+ lb rucksack every mission that we walk anywhere unless I can find a reason to lighten the load. On average though I'm carrying around 100 pounds and having to keep up with the 11B's sucks when a lot of them aren't carrying anything but a weapon, water and what's in their kit for ammo. Taking care of my feet helps me keep up. When I've had to go fast, having a pair of boots that I trust aren't going to let me down is huge in keeping up with the riflemen.
My basic rule that I live by for this stuff and tell other's is...if it works for you don't change it. If you like it...go with it.
The government issues standard types of boots. Non-standard "high-performance boots have been something issued by some units and not by others. It depends on the unit and their leadership and how they spend their money. I've had to buy high performance boots and I've been issued them too. Even conventional soldiers are starting to be issued higher performance boots because so many of the standard issue type of boots just aren't holding up in terrain. I got home from Afghanistan in late March and when I was leaving I was seeing lots of soldiers wearing non-standard boots.
As far as what Iroc said about them being in compliance with regulations...it again all depends on the leadership. The Oakley's I had we desert tan and were in compliance. I can wear those boots back home and never get the first question. My Asolo's I only wear to the field. They are similar in color to our uniforms but not really for garrison wear.
That may be clear as mud but it's my experience.

you get basic issue that is certifiably crap! Made by lowest bidder. Basic issue boots barely make it out of Basic Training and AIT. When you go on certain types of deployments they will issue specific gear for the environment you happen to be working in. Now every once in a blue moon eclipse you'll get issue some really good stuff. They are getting better but it still goes through a committee that makes sure their district is getting a cut if you know what I mean. So to answer your question, most of the time we had/have to buy our own gear if we wanted some quality boots, socks, poly-pros (under garments to keep up warm and dry) and gloves too. Some one post above - dry = warm, cold = wet and miserable

Yea that reminds me I need to order some of those as well.I had a set until the wife thought you could dry them in a clothes dryer(yea she got bitched out)
I always wore the altamas that was issued during basic training. They would last much longer than anything I could get at that price on the civilian market.

Phantom Black Metallic- 2004 GTO M6
The last pair of RWs I bought were $300 I think. Lasted me from 06 to 09. They can take a beating. Anything else would be destroyed within months as far as I am concerned. Considering walking, pushing no-start vehicles across the shop lot, walking in salt-covered snow, spilling motor oil, tranny fluid, coolant on them, etc. Before I bought my first pair of RWs, I was told by a then coworker I would like them...and I do.
I buy mine from the Red Wing store in Hackensack. I think there is one at Willowbrook Mall or the West Belt Mall next door.

Did your momma hit you too hard in the head,I mean damnit $300 for a pair of boots is insane. Those fuckers better last for my entire life for that price. The altimas last that long if not longer for me.
Try RW's website, see if the have any sales.
Mine was sitting on my chair when I got home,I ripped into those boxes like it was Christmas morning! The whole time my son is yelling" I WANT THE BOXES I WANT THE BOXES" My wife was shocked at the price when she seen the quality of the boots. she said " wow for 59 bucks I thought they would be garbage" she was even more shocked when she found out I got a free T-shirt.
On my inspection i was quite happy to see that they actually have a little bit of insulation with the padding they have on the inside. it is simular to the booties that go inside of winter boots like sorrels ect, just not as thick. They also have better cushioning than what comes with the military issued boots that I normaly get. I am thrilled with this purchase!
I just have to relace them,I don't like how they do it. My best friend showed me how the do it in the military to make them easier to get on and off without unlacing them partially. he also showed me how to polish them the right way.

Navy Blue Metallic- 2000 T/A Firehawk M6
i still have my FDNY issue duty boots. actually fairly decent stuff. They don't issue these anymore. the new gear is nothing like what i had back in 2001-2005.
They still make em too. these are the same brand and almost the exact same style. all the same features though
