4l60e swap to turbo 400
Please help? I am wanting to remove my 4l60e trans with a 3400 tci converter and swap my car over to a turbo 400 with a tci 3500 stall. Is thee anything wierd I hav to do or is it a simple swap? I figure I'll need a crossmember but i don't know if I need anything else. My car is a 2000 Z-28 with the original LS-1 Thanks.

Subscribed for the info.
May I ask why you are swapping transmissions -- is this going to be just a track car?

The car is more than likely only going to be used on the track and in town for like cruise nights, shows ect.. I purchased a 24 foot enclosed trailer when I raced my 68 Camaro and I use that if the cars going to the track incase it breaks or whatever. I am just use to the turbo 400 an i like a manual valve body.

You can get a manual valve body for the 4l60-E. The 400 is big and the tails are not the same length so I think a drive shaft is needed as well as crossmember.

The MVB's for the 60's are slow; they suck next to the th400s. If you are keeping a 60, keep PCM control.
I reflash the cars as manual trans cars on the tuning side to run non-PCM controlled trans like the th350/th400/PG/4l60MVB's.
You need to add an add-on VSS to the trans or wire into a wheel speed sensor and feed that back tot he PCM so that the PCM will know when the car is moving.Last edited by Frost; 08-24-2010 at 04:48 PM.

Information can be found in this link, Page 45.

Edit: I see this is for T56 going to TH400... I'll leave it up. Might still have some information you can use.

Don't have an answer for the swap. But why not go to the 4l80e? Shares some internals with the th400 and has OD.. It's also big and may require fire wall mods too but @ least you'll have the strength of a th400 + OD..

Just devil's advocate but...
1. It's REALLY heavy
2. It has LONG under-geared first gear
3. A th400 just needs an M6 flash, the 80 needs a segment swap to control it
4. The 80 needs rewiring or an adapter harness
5. Installed cost of a 4l80 is much higher than a th400... the good stalls alone start around $800
6. You have to hammer the mess out of the tunnel for the main cable connector to clear.
I sound like I don't like 80s here, but that's not true; just devil's advocate for the question.Last edited by Frost; 08-31-2010 at 05:39 AM.

400 will bolt up. You can modify an M6 cross member to work. Even if it WOULD fit, if you need a th400, you need something more than a stock drive shaft.

Yeah I know they're heavy. Just like the "T" 4t80e is a monster. But I've seen Hot Rodders use them for thier rides. Was just wondering/curious.. I knew there would have to be mods for it to fit, I just figure you'd get comparable strength but have the luxury of OD is all.. I have experiance with the turboHydro 350 and 400 in older stuff (mostly 4x4 pickups and land yachts) but am not familier with all of what it takes for an lsx swap with either transmission tho.. Learn something new here everyday.. I also did'nt know 1st was so long in the 4l80e..
For me I tend to steer more towards the GM OHV and DOHC 6er's and early Northstars.. Mostly 60* stuff with the exception of my 90* 3800-II y87 and l36/l67 lineage.. Thanks for the info Frost..Last edited by Smittro; 08-31-2010 at 06:32 AM.

Make sure you are using the correct flex plate for your engine. Take some pics of the swap and post them back here so we can all see.
