Stall
I have a 98 Firbird Formula, with an auto trans. on it. I want to add a stall but I have no idea what would be good or how much it will cost me. Any info on this would be helpful.

LS1 guys like to go big. usually I see them saying 3600, so I guess it all comes down to how you want to use it and do you need around town fuel millage. you could go safe at like 2800 or go big to 4000. cars come with about 1650's so anything will be a vast improvment. I'm sure some LS1 guys will pipe in.

I started with a 3500 and enjoyed the heck out of it. Once you get use to a 3500 about a week you will think it should have come with one. Make sure to buy a tranny cooler when you buy a stall.

I started out with a 2,800 stall, (it was too small for my small cam). Now I run a 3,800 stall and love it.
I lost about 2 mpg in town with the stall but it would be my 1st mod if I ever started again.
I have it set to lock at 35 mph in my normal tune so its not that bad on gas.
Like said before, a cooler is manditory with a stall and I'd even add one with a completely stock tranny. Heat kills trannies!

While you've got the tranny out you might want to take a deeper look at the internals. Mileage on tranny and intended usage will determine what (and how much) you'll want to replace and/or spend. You'll also want to check out deleting Torque Management and substituting a shift kit (with attendant mods).
Also, depending on what you intend (DD or race or combo) you might want to skim some threads related to this (stall converters). There are some good ones on this site on how different manufacturers construct their TC's. A ~3400 stall with lock up will not effect your daily driving much. That's what I have and I hardly notice it when I drive the 02. I probably should've went higher.

I've seen just about everyone mention installing a tranney cooler and keeping the stock one but no one has mentioned where they put it.
Is there an area I'm overlooking?

Tranny cooler usually goes in front of the radiator (or condensor) unless you are running a FTRA or similar.

id go no less then 3200 stall on a LS1 car.
i was gonna do a 3600 on my LT1. thats right where the torque band peaks. the LS1 motors make there power and torque pretty high up in RPM's.
if i had a auto ls1, i would go for a 3600-4000 stall for a street car

black- 2000 nhra edition formula
I have a 3000 rpm stall. Could of i gone bigger, sure, but i didnt want to.
A good street stall for an ls1 is anywhere between 3000-3500 rpm.
You will easily shave off a .5 tenths with above and youll no longer have that dead spot at about 37 miles per hour when you punch it.2000 nhra edition formula

after all the searching i did when i was in a similar situation as yours i believe that i made the best choice with a 3800-4200 BDR Converter....as far as a cooler, B&M SuperCooler's seem to be very popular
