Ls6 coolant tubes question
Hey guys, I have a question for those of you that have swapped your ls1 intake to a ls6. Did you buy the Ls6 steam tubes or did you just grind the fins off the bottom of the Ls6 to make the Ls1 tubes work? I will be doing this swap in the next couple of days and im split between what to do. Ive heard it is better to keep the Ls1 tubes, however i dont know if i feel very comfortable chiseling away my brand new Ls6... Does anyone have any input?
Thanks

I have done both...when I did my swap (FAST90) I used the LS6 tubes. But when I put a LS6 Intake on my friend's vette, he didn't believe me when I told him he needed new tubes, so we were forced to grind down the fins so his stock tubes could fit.

those fins are there for a reason. if i remember right, they have to do with cooling.
the biggest gripe people have about the ls6 pipes compared to the ls1 pipes is that they say number 7 cylinder and 8 will have cooling problems..that is bull anyways. Most of those problems come from improper install of the rear plugs. there was an article explaining all of this..but i cant find it.

note that the ls7 coolant lines are very very similar to the ls6 with only the front crossover pipe.

So many people out there grind off the fins and don't have any problems
Its plastic, cooling isn't a big deal
Compare it to the aluminum intakes out there, unlike a metal intake it doesn't need coolant running through it to keep it cool
There is nothing wrong with either setup, the LS1 setup is just a better design

Do what's easiest for you to get the install done.
Either way will work obviously, but the LS1 system provides the opportunity for better bank to bank coolant flow/balance. It may be an added benefit or design redundancy GM decided wasn't necessary and without a doubt it costs GM less for the LS6 system - and the bean counters always win out.
If it were me, I'd keep the LS1 coolant pipes in play.

I am in the middle of doing this, down to cutting my block to add the ls6 valley pan, I have both the ls1 x style steam tube and the newer ls6 steam tubes, the ls6 intake already had the fins chiseled but the issue with using the ls1 x pipe and the ls 6 valley pan in the bumps in the ls6 valley pan. So has anyone used the ls1 x steam pipe with an ls6 valley pan?
And on all of the steam tubes are those lil plates with orings considered the gaskets, even though the tubes also have some rubber oring looking things on them too?Regards,
Todd
