If it is anything like the lifts I have used it appears its cable operated and more than likely they disabled the "locks" that protects it from doing something like this. My guess is a cable broke and the did not have safety locks operational or had a bungee cord on it so the locks wouldnt engage.

Pewter- 2001 Camaro Z28 M6
how it happened: (operating lift, 1 person)
With two posts lifts, to lower a car usually you have to send the lift up a few inches, run under the car and pull the release on the opposite side that catches the lift lock, then run back under the car to the to the lift control handle and continue letting the car down. (this method is easier with 2 people, so you dont have to run back and fourth) (as a 1 person job, you have to do this fast because if you dont release the opposite side fast enough, you have to start all over)
more then likely this camaro owner, works on the car buy himself, removed/disable the the release like a dumbass, because he got tired of running back and fourth under the lift.Last edited by ibanez7; 11-27-2009 at 10:51 AM.

^^ That is how my Mohawk works. Only thing I do different is I go around the vehicle and not under it when disengaging the safety locks. In addition to mechanical safety locks, my lift also has blow out valves on the cylinders. If pressure is lost due to a line break, the cylinders lock in place and will not move until pressure is restored.
I agree, the saftey locks must have been disabled for this to happen to the Camaro.
