Sorry guys I don't mean to seem like an ass but these cars (especially 1st gens) are my passion and I hate to see folks get their facts wrong.

Did you know that the 67 Firebird didn't debut until Jan 67? They (meaning John DeLorean, head of Pontiac at the time) got on board late and had to play catchup with Chevrolet.
And did they ever get onboard. My 2002 is modded and runs mid 12's but I had my ass handed to me last month by a (stock looking) 68 RAII 400 vert during a monthly cruise. I got him to pull over and while we talked he revealed that his car wasn't as stock as he let on. Still had cast iron exhaust, intake and a reworked Rochester. FYI: 400 cid RAII engines has the round exhaust ports. 370 hp my ass... more like 420-430.Last edited by 67CamaroRSSS; 11-06-2009 at 06:50 PM.

sold: 1999 firebird- 1998 Trans Am
and that it didnt go on sale until feb 23rd yes? i know it was a poser car but i just like it best, my favorite is the 68 with side markers and no side flappy windows, i'd kill for a vert with a 400/4speed

i did a book report on them in 5th grade or something... that grew into an interest that grew into a passionLast edited by justinmc978; 11-06-2009 at 06:53 PM.

IMHO it (RAII) made much more horsepower and torque than they let on. Back in the day GM had a "No more than 10hp/100 lbs edict" for their smaller cars. This equal a max 370hp for a 3700lb car (which is about what a fully equiped BBC 1st gen weighs). Hence the "370hp/400" and "375hp/396" and no 427's till 69 (in the Camaro) when they made them only to homologate them for racing in the NHRA.

They are correct. Just straighten out the throttle rod and you'd get full throttle. I recall this from back in the day.
For those that don't know: 1st gens had a rod that went from the carb bellcrank to a flat lever the was actuated by depressing the pedal to get the car to accelerate. Different engines (BBC vs SBC vs I6) used different rods and levers. In 1970 they went to a throttle cable similar to what our 4th gens have.Last edited by 67CamaroRSSS; 11-06-2009 at 07:16 PM.

The 396 has a bore of 4.094 which in 1970 was increased to 4.125 (overbored .031") in 1970 to help with the emmissions requirements. This was the 1st year they did this. It last till the last BB (for Camaro) in 1972. They continued to call it a 396 because they had already invested quite a bit in the particular nomenclature (SS396) over the years.

, also i'm really more into firebirds than maros anyways
) that they put a restrictor in the ram air 2 f-body cars. Which might be why it's seemingly underrated, everyone quickly fixed the throttle restriction
