    no...but i tried.

a friend of mine was riding his motorcycle in front of me and he did a wheelie. when he brought the front end down he had a bit of headshake but it was nothing major. as he started into this wide left hand sweeper i saw his back wheel lock up as though either the trans or brake locked up (later found out that was an issue with the R1 from that year). he tried to low side the bike into the ditch but when the back tire hit the gravel it caught and stood the bike upright and he ended up high siding it instead.

he got thrown off of the bike at about 40 or 50 mph and ended up hitting a telephone pole about 6 feet off the ground in the middle of his back. the impact knocked his helmet off of him. i sped up and by the time that i got there he had gotten up and then collapsed on the ground. myself and another guy that stopped did cpr as some other friends called 911. we did cpr until the emt's and paramedics arrived. in the end he died from internal bleeding in the ditch as we were doing cpr...but we didn't stop trying until the medics took over.

that was one of the single shittiest days of my life.

I was a Fire Department of New York EMT from 11/9/01-4/1/05 The city of NY receives roughly 4000 emergency medical calls per day. On any average shift I would respond to 5-8 calls. In my time with the FDNY I worked roughly 880 straight time shifts and many many mandatory overtime tours due to constant short staffing. this means that at least 7,000 NY'ers have been touched in some way by my personal response to their medical emergencies. Some of them were stabbed and bleeding to death. Some had heart attacks and were clinically dead when I met them. Many of those cardiac arrests were brought back through the careful teamwork of myself, my partner and the dedicated medics of NY. Some were car accidents or pedestrians hit by cars. Some were sports injuries. Some were in labor. Some people were attempting suicide, at least one attempted by hanging in an elevator shaft that I pulled them safely from. Some were shot. Some were industrial accidents. and of course many were beyond saving.

No matter what the nature of the emergency was we were always there, prepared and ready to tackle the challenge. At fire scenes, at haz mat incidents, at car accidents, in private homes and places of business. it took me three and a half years to experience what amounts to just 2 days of the entire NYC emergency medical response system. A great doctor has no work if there isn't an excellent prehospital care environment with the training the skills and the ability to treat and transport living patients to his emergency room and allow him to do his job.

Have I saved lives? Yes. Could I tell you how many? probably not. I can say at least 1 but less than 7,000.

I saved five last year. One the truck's in my plt. decided to charge a technical with a gun mounted in the back. When they started getting in a fight I called for fire on the technical with two gun runs. All 5 made it out alive. Two were awarded the Bronze star and one got the Silver Star for dismounting and supressing once the truck was disabled. I got a Navy Comm. with a V for controlling the air and directing them onto the tgt for the desired effect.

There have been some other instances as well but I am too lazy to type them all.

Well, this kid and his mother (on her cell phone) were walking towards me (kid was balancing on the curb and his mother was walking on the grass), so I move into the road so I'm not in their way. As I'm getting level with them, I hear a car coming up behind me, so I turn my head around to see if I should move out of the car's way. I see I'm fine where I am, so I turn back around to continue walking. As I turn around, this all happens in super slow motion... the kid walking towards me, jumps in front of me (car can't see the kid past me), then jumps in front of the car. I instinctively grab the kid by the shoulders and yank him out of the car's way. The car slams on it's brakes, which gets the attention of the mother. She looks over and see's me holding her kid. She runs over and hits me with her purse and yells at me to get off of her kid. I then stand up and grab her purse before she can hit me again and tell her to calm down. Of course, she gets more hysterical and screams at the top of her lungs for help. A security guard at the door runs over and sees me trying to retrain this woman and he thinks I'm trying to rob her (in broad daylight). So he runs over and is trying to get me to the ground, which I fight, cause in my mind, I did nothing wrong. This is the point at which the driver of the car (thank God he stayed) gets out and is trying to tell the woman and the security guard what happened. The security guard finally hears his guy yelling at him to stop and he stops fighting with me (more like wrestling while standing). After the lady has stopped screaming and hitting me, the driver tells the security guard and the lady what happened. The security guard apologizes and asks if I need a first aid kit (my nose is bloody from a lucky strike from the lady's purse), I say, "I'm fine". I turn to the lady and ask if she's going to first thank me and then apologize too. She asks, "for what?" I was taken aback by that, and it took me a good 10 seconds of sputtering to get the words out..."Lets see, for saving your demented kid's life and then being beaten up by your fucking ugly-ass pink purse that feels like you have fucking bricks in it!" Her response was, "my kid isn't demented and pink is a very fashionable color," and starts walking away. The driver and the security guard both look at me aghast...I just saved his woman's young child and she's nothing even going to say "thank you". I then yell after her, "I hope there is no one around to save him the next time the little fuck-up decides to jump in front of a moving vehicle, maybe you should teach him life lessons, instead of yapping on your cell phone."

Copied from a thread I made awhile ago...damn, got me pissed off just rereading it
Should have grabbed her purse.. emptied out the contents right there in front of her then thrown it out into traffic.. and crossed your fingers someone would have hit her while she went to retrieve it..

Convertable ran a redlight, got hit from a car turning & was thrown into a ditch.
As it goes down the side it turns upside down & the driver is knocked out & underwater.
I blow through the redlight, park & jump in as did 5 other guys. We grabbed it & forced the car over enough to get the driver out of the water.
Meantime & guy with a pickup backs in on the opposite side & hooks long rope between the A-frame & rear axle & hooks up to his hitch.
Cut the seatbelt & drug his ass out.

Got a letter from the chief of police for that deal.
    Never heard from the driver.
SOB made me late for work!

went over my friends house one night, he was going through a real hard time in his life. I noticed he was really down and something was wrong. So I took the time to just talk with him, well after talking for a 15 min or so we got to the heart of the matter, and started talking about life and perspective. We ended up talking for about 2 hours.

The next day or later that week, cant remember, he told me that he was going to try to kill himself that night by taking a whole bottle of pain killers. He said he actually went to the drug store and bought some (idk what kind). And he told me that I saved his life, I told him that I was just being a good friend.

Just goes to show you, take time in life to care for those around you, because you never know the effect it can have. I couldn't imagine the guilt I would have felt if i had just left that night because he was in a "bad" or "down" kinda mood.

    anyways, thats my story

I don't know if this qualifies, but, one morning I took my mother to her cardiologist appointment as my mother has a bad ticker. The week before the visit, she was issued a halter monitor(portable heart monitor, recorder) which recorded an issue. Welp, while we were at the Dr's office, I get summoned to his office, something he has NEVER done before. My body went cold right at that moment. The Dr. asked me:

"Richie Jr., how fast can you get your mother to the E.R.?"

    Me: "I dunno...why?"

Dr.: "Get your mother to the E.R. right away...she is having arrythmias which could lead up to a heart attack. DO NOT STOP FOR ANY RED LIGHTS!!!"

    Me: "OK, I'm on it!"

I got my mother the Valley Hospital in 5 minutes driving at 85-90 mph. Man it hurt having to leave her there while she was balling her eyes out. The E.R. staff admitted her right there for an unexpected weeklong stay. Man, I couldn't sleep a wink. This is why I watch my folks like a hawk.

Nope. In my Z24, my first car. Upper Saddle River to Ridgewood is a 5 minute drive right down Rt17 southbound. Had the 4-ways on the whole time. It was a scary day for me. One moment, I am mellow, the next, haulin @$$ down the highway. This was in '96.

Hey cammed goat, that reminds me of one Thanksgiving with my grandpa. We were at our grandparents' lakehouse at Toledo Bend on the Louisiana/Texas border. He had been feeling like shit and wouldn't leave his bed to even smoke. He never smoked in the house before. But we ended up heading to Houston as the hospitals are shit around there. Well my grandma was driving his truck like 5-10 under because she was "so nervous" and he's just reclined back in the chair acting like he was about to die, because he was. So we pull over and my uncle takes him 100+ all the way to Houston in his truck, a diesel F-250 on 35 m/t's, which i'm sure was comfortable and safe feeling. Including through one of the most cop infested stretches of highway there is. Don't know how he didn't get stopped. The doctors said a couple more minutes and he could have died or gone into a diabetic coma his blood sugar was so high. And it would have taken forever with my grandma or if my uncle had been pulled over... Scary shit.

Scary indeed. And now I am remembering my mother sobbing while I left her in the E.R. Talk about feeling helpless. I think that will haunt me for the rest of my life. Now I nag the livin sh1t outta both parents to keep their Dr's appts and NOT cancel or reschedule. I want them both around for a long while. They are both in their mid 50s and to me that is STILL young.

Back when i was 13ish we just moved to a new home and i had much to explore. well 2 things i was never supposed to do I did that day. One was take my .22 without dad being around, and 2 going in the woods. Good thing i did. I kept hearing screaming so I followed the noise.

Nothing could prepere me for what i seen .An older (60's maybe 70's) year old man with a tractor rolled on his leg up to his pelvis. I immediatly ran to the nearest house called 911 and then ran back to try to keep him calm and from going into shock. Maybe it was the fact my Grandfather died when a tractor rolled on top of him, or maybe it was pure compassion I don't know. I sat there and helped as much as I could.

The EMT'S was able to use air jacks to lift the tractor enough to get him out.Without a doubt in my mind if it wasn't for me disobeying my parents he would have died.Thank God my parents seen it the same way or it would have been my funeral.

After he got well enough to be let out of the hospital he stopped by my house .He offered me money , which I tried like hell to refuse, but no was not the answer he was taking. He also let me hunt his property, and Often I would go check on him and see if he needed anything. I spent many days with my best friend and our fathers cutting wood for him.I guess in a way he was like the Grandfather I lost many years earlier. unfortionatly he passed a few years ago,When I visit home I make it a point to visit my real grandfathers and my almost real grandfathers graves.

My youngest cousin fell into a pond when he was maybe 3 i went after him(not even thinking I wasn't a good swimmer either) somehow someway got us both out. and got whipped before I could explain what happened. Once I did though everyone felt bad lol. To this day he calls me his hero.

    People saving my life

My youngest uncle when the house caught on fire when I was a kid(5ish)
same uncle when a cow decided to chase me (4ish)

Times i should have been dead and didn't even get a scratch

    Too many to count lol

    oh wait I am dead

My mothers favorite line was "when your father gets home he is going to beat you half to death" well I got so many of those i am dead several times over.

Yeah, I'm an EKG Tech (until I finish school at least). We monitor people's hearts while they're in their hospital rooms, sleeping, eating, walking, whatever...and report if they go into a dangerous rhythm. We can even call a code where doctors, house supervisors, and EVERYONE comes in to help, (haven't had to call a code myself yet). I've saved several by calling and telling the nurses to get off youtube and go see what room ### is doing etc.
The creepy thing is actually seeing someone die. It's a lot like you see on tv, just that it's someone who's name you can see. The weirdest thing I ever saw is this guy died, total flatline or asytole, for like 3 mins+ more than once. He was a no code and the nurse just went in to take vitals each time and the dude came back several times! Just from having his bloodpressure taken, I guess somehow it got things started back. Anyway he lived until the end of my shift, don't know what happened from there cause I was off for a few days.

I've donated just under 17 gallons of blood so, probably yes. I'm a cytomegalo virus negative so they usually take blood from me in a quad bag kit to use on infants and children.

When I was 16 my Boy Scout troop was up at Hawk mountain, PA for our winter camping trip. One of the younger boys went out on to the ice before the adults could check it. He walked over a thin spot and went in. He manage to make an opening about 8 ft across and couldn't swim, so in I go. I jump in swim up behind him and drag him to the edge. Other boys pull him out, then get me out. It was the next day before my balls dropped back down. The water was F'ing cold. Outside temp was 28 degrees.

There some other times but I won't count them because they were either when I was a paramedic or while I was in the Army.
