I just don’t understand why they spent the money developing a very desirable (based on the premiums commanded by dealerships) mid-engine “supercar” that only had a 3 year production run.

the GT was to always be a limited run..it was produced for 3 years..to match the 3 years that the gt40 was in racing 1965-1968...also it was rushed and conceived to be part of ford's centennial in 03' ...so that is why it was so limited

I guess you guys didn't ready the Car and Driver article a few months back when they tested the GT Mustang, SS Camaro, and the Challanger R/T. The gt won that shoot out and they are in the same price range.

Anyways I know that this is an LS1 web site but don't be so closed minded. Each car is good in there own right.

I understand that it was Ford’s intention to have a limited run of the GT but from a business perspective it makes less sense to see that intention through once the car was a hit.

To the extent the engineering, r&d, etc. are sunk costs (those costs in total don’t change if you build/sell 1 GT or 1,000,000 GT’s) why not keep making a popular model that people are buying since unit costs only go down per car for every additional car made?

The GT could still be made in ’04-’06 specs for another 10 years with minor improvements like the NSX and still be a hit in 10 years. Given that they did not replace it with another “supercar” I can’t see the justification for ending production.

After watching that video this is what is learned

Supercharged GT500 $50K plus to be 1/2 second faster than the $32K Camaro yeah its fair...not. What could you do with the 18K dollars left after buying the Camaro.

ps thats my favorite car overral EVAR. Its super fast, looks incredible, fast as hell, ubermod potential, an engine that can handle over 1,300 horses with a stock bottom end, handles world class, is american, sounds american. Its one of those rare cars that is just something truly special. If i had to think of my ideal performance car, the ford gt is it. Just too bad ill never afford one

one other thing, just like shady said, the ford gt was only ever supposed to be 3 yrs, AND even if ford wanted to build it longer, the car didnt meet 07 crash standards and would have taken a bundle of money to conform and would have changed the overral look of the car.

the control arms were 20k a piece. I'm not sure what it cost to build a ford gt, but I DO know that the dealers made some loot on them. The dealer i worked at sold 3 of them and 2 went for 250k+ the third 175k
