Questions about the possible Assault Weapon Ban
So, I was watching the news yesterday and they had a 30 second clip of the Attorney General talking about the want to re-implement the Federal Assault Weapon Ban by the new administration. This seems pretty likely to happen in my opinion, so I have a couple of questions. I wasn't old enough the first time around, but how long did it take for the original (1994) act to be passed? How much warning was given? How will the prices of the potentially banned weapons be effected after the act is announced, up to it being passed? Also, what is the deal with owning a previously unbanned weapon during the length of the ban?
The reason I ask is, I am interested in owning one, but not exactly in the near-immediate future... Yet if this ban gets reimplemented, I don't want to have to wait until the next republican president gets elected to be able to purchase one (legally).
(Please also note: I am asking this in the AAG because it will get a lot of views and I know there are many gun owning members. I'm only looking for relatively simple speculative answers to my questions. If you want to discuss the 2nd amendment or the politics of it, please make your own thread in the political/debate forum, I don't want this one locked.)

The only real thing that bothers me with that is the inspection part, giving up the 4th amendment rights.
I would only use the firearm at the range, for home self-defense(live in a Castle Doctrine state), or if SHTF. So the others, licensing and the test, etc, doesn't seem to bad, as long as the process doesn't take longer than your average driver license application process and testing.

I know they're trying to push the Blair Holt Act back through.
Basically, everything purchased after bill implementation gets registered. And you have to register yourself as an owner. If you sell a firearm the Atty General needs notification. Basically, it's a way to track who has what and where.
Nothing in what I've read yet regarding retroactive registration (ie. if you purchased ANY firearm pre-Blair Holt Act)
I'm curious too about Grand-fathering. I have a Post Brady-Bill, Pre-Ban (okay, the new 2009 ban) AR-15. I guess you'd call it a Post-Pre Ban...
M4 stock (retractable)
Flash Hider
Bayonet Lug
Drop-out 30 round mags (no CA "bullet button here")
I've got the documentation/sales receipt showing when I bought it. If memory serves me, the first ban (Brady Bill) made it illegal to manufacture, but not illegal to own / possess.
Some of my mags made during that 10 year span are stamped LEO-Only

Blair Holt does not care about what you already own....at least not on paper, and not yet.
What I forsee happening if it passes: Eventually, you'll have to register everything. Go to the range, you better have your registration (as you do currently with supressors, full-autos, etc.). If LEO stops you they can request you produce it. If you don't have it on you, you will be arrested (or at least detained) and your items confiscated.
This is how it is with ClassIII items now (which i have no problems with). They're setting the stage for things to come.
Change doesn't happen in one fell swoop. It happens slowly as your freedoms are eroded away.
(See, I used the word "CHANGE"! YES WE CAN take your guns)

I would just buy whatever guns you want ASAP. The last few bans grandfathered in guns, but some of the new bill are talking about not being just a ten year period like the last ban, but a permanent one, so it probably wouldn't matter if a republican president got back in or not.

The price on weapons will go up. I bought a few AR15 lowers before Osama became pres for $110 now those same lowers go for close to $200. Even if we get a republican as pres next time if Osama says the ban is for 10 years it will be for 10 years.
If you own a gun at the moment the ban will have no effect on it. The ban will ONLY effect weapons made after the ban. Meaning if you cannot afford a complete AR15 I would suggest buying a lower or a stripped lower NOW. I have a complete AR15 and 5 stripped lowers.

Thats a good deal. Here in texas the cheapest I've seen was close to $900. Just make sure that the reciever is CAST not molded. I think they are all cast now but you never know. Do you know what brand? Good ones are COLT ( no brainer) RRA ( Rock River Armes) and DPMS. Those are my faves and all good brands.

I also went to bushmaster website because I always hear that name thrown around when talking about AR15s, but when I saw the prices at $1200+ I lol'd and hit the back button. I guess they're the BMW models or something.
