Need help reducing road noise
Hi all. I'm trying to reduce road noise in my 98 TA. I know the tires are a big factor but I can just replace them yet. I'm trying to get ideas on what product material I can use. My local audio store sells Dynamat. I also read about people using carpet pad insulation and A/C duct insulation. I'm trying to save money as much as possible. My main road noise problem is on the highway. Specially if it rains. I can hear my tires like my windows are down on a wet road. It's horrible. I probably going to start in the wheel wells. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hey there, yea I know what mean with road noise. I would start with dynomat (there is a cheaper product out there, forget the name though). Dynomat the shelf behind the rear seats and wheel wells. The insulation stops at the top of it, cheap buggers.

I never done anything with my z as far as insulating it but i did add used carpet pad to my old blazer and it helped a little bit, my guess is the dyno mat would work much better

I'm going to 'dynamat' everything, whether I do it all at once or do it in sections as time permits in between work projects.

I used Dynamat-like material (I forget the brand) on the area behind the seats and used the Frost King stuff to completely line the well that the T-tops fit in.
Did the wheelwells and inner fenders (that I could get to) with the frost King also.
And just to be anal, I lined the under side of the center console with the stuff too since it always seemed to have a "cheap" sound to it.
Significant difference in road noise.
But now you can hear all the other weird noises that the body makes as it twists and groans. And my car has SFCs too

You can do dynomat in small areas. I believe but not sure they have a web site to show you the best places to put strips of it to reduce noise. You can also get something called lizard skin that sprays on. Don't know how well it works but at an audio store local uses it.

If you can afford to do so, using Dynamat throughout the car is probably the best way to go. However, since you said you are on a budget, I'd recommend you buy a few cans of that rubberized spray-on liner and coat the inside of your wheel wells and on the underbody.

I sprayed the wheel wells with rubberized undercoat. Helped a lot for about $5. I should use some insulation material out of a wrecked car to quiet it down some more. But, really it's not too bad now. I do run Firestone Firehawks on there. It's a lot quietier than the Goodyears that came on the car. I hear Goodyear F1 GS D3 are really pretty quiet though.

Just the wheel wells? How about the underside of the cabin floor?

I've used truck bed liner, you can get it gallon or quarts at atuo zone and advance and spray or brush it on. a few good coats will make a big difference
