98 automatic or 00 manual?
Sorry for the numerous posts today but I was wondering what would you rather do....buy a 1998 trans am ws6 with 53,000 miles AUTOMATIC or a 2000base trans am with 68,000 miles manual. I'm just curious as to how badly the automatic transmission responds in terms of 0-60 and how it reacts when you stop on the gas at high speeds ( praying for no ridiculous high gear shifts ). Which do you think would perform better overall? What could I do to improve the automatic transmission if anything and is it effective ( such as chips ).

I would never buy a auto... Stick is muuuuch more fun
I would rather have a WS6 but the 00 and stick outweigh it by faar.94 m6 Formula - Sold

I've driven both but, dont' know which one I like better. I had a white 99 baseline Firebird manual and liked it alot. Totaled it out putting the sun visor out of the way and hit a rain drain on the shoulder.
Looked around for a manual T/A but, couldn't find one for my price range. I ended up with a 00 Black auto with 30,500 miles on it in Chicago area so, I bought it and have been very happy with it. Raced it at Gateway INTL and I was impressed with the quick shift time. I could never do that on my own and saved me a few seconds I'm sure. I'm old though.

A shift kit and a stall would be the way to go for an automatic.

Auto's are great for lazy cruising or a single purpose drag car
But a Manual makes you feel more connected and is definetly more fun.Craig

Yeah, I think that is what I'm lacking. I always find myself with my right hand on the autoshift lever like I'm gonna do something. Maybe a fake arcade joy stick would pacify me........lol.
Manual FTW.........lol.

i would get the manual they get way better gas milage to my bro's 6 speed at like 80 will will be at like 1800 and my auto at 80 is nearing 3000 with 3.73's though and the manual will be much more fun to drive as well

if it is either for a track (drag) car only that is focused on times or a daily driver in heavy stop and go traffic, get the auto. if it is a fun car or daily cruising on highway, def get the manual.
i get 30 highway and over 20 city with my m6. could an auto do that? no, def not. and with a stall the car is going to get even worse gas mileage. plus, manuals are much more fun.
no one regrets manuals, but if you have an auto there's always the time where a friend sees your car and says "awesome car, is it a stick?" and you feel a little sad inside and wished it was. i've been there with my previous car.

I would rather have a stalled auto but that's neither here nor there.
If you want to straight compare cars I would get the 00 but not because of the m6, for me that'd be a turn off. I'd get the 00 because the 00 has windows in the mains and the oil passages on the rear of the block were changed which helps with oiling. The rod bolts were also upgraded. The pcm in the 00 is also better than the pcm in the 98.
