It goes from server, to node, to houses (very basic). The "node" transfers the light impules from the fiber to electrical impulses to be used by the copper. Each node supports anywhere from 50-500 customers (though sometimes it's more like 500+) and I'm 99.9% sure each node is where the bandwith is split up at. i.e: 500 people on the node, 250 using, they pass the extra bandwith to everyone else, and when more people get on, the bandwith is split ever so much to feed them as well.
Any other Comcast employees on here that know more please feel free to correct me/ add, as my knowledge is pretty much a basic understanding of how it all works.
Spaz, you do know that Verizon just puts a node on your house, cuts our shit coming in, and feeds right into our old cable lines right!!!!???? They just put a mini node on each house instead of each node serving many customers. They still have to split service, though they can do so slightly more efficiently, hence their slightly higher speeds. Although they offer about 3 Megs more than Comcast does, there other service is, ehh, ok....I mean I'm not here to bash Verizon, but people need to know wht the real deal is.
THERE ARE NO TV's/ DIGITAL CONVERTERS ON THE MARKET THAT ACCEPT FIBER!!!!!! (except for optical audio, and it's actually a piece of plastic)

Packet Internet Groping...No lie!
I dunno how to really explain it without going ino a huge lecture, but here goes...
Internet info is sent out in packets. Each packet has a header, payload, and trailor. Ping measures how efficiently your cpu/modem is recieving internet info (packets).
It can also be used to check if your ethernet port on your cpu is f*ed

according to my providers website-- they have different levels of net..
All cable -- basic, preferred, max service, unbeatable service...
I remember this now-- I think I went wih the preferred, or something like that...
does that sound right?

Blue- 1999 Trans Am

My Fios is a mixed bag, my speeds seem more consistant then they were on cable. I was on a high use node for cable and I'd often see times were I couldn't even game well because of ping/packet loss issues. My Torrent speeds on Fios are also incredible compared to anything I've had before.
On the downside, Verizons DVR is a worthless piece of crap.Last edited by charliebrown1321; 05-29-2008 at 08:21 PM. Reason: wrong link, had to get my few extra kbps :P

All employees get free cable/internet but you have to pay half if you want to upgrade. I have every single channel, savage internet speeds and I pay about $6.00/month
They offer us phone at like $15/month as well, but I have a cell so I don't really need it...PPV/movies/etc = 1/2 off, so it's like taking away a full utility every month
It's kinda nice.
