Is it as fast as a gas grill....no, but we're only talking minutes difference to do steaks or brats/burgers. I can easily light mine and have steaks on the table inside of 45 minutes from start to finish. Steaks only take a couple minutes per side anyhow on a real hot grill.....I like 'em medium rare. I also use charcoal and wood. Wood by itself can give a bitter taste so I use the charcoal for heat and the wood for flavor.
I just rubbed down a pot roast and deer roast tonight that I'm going to smoke tomorrow.
I should be able to make it out there for dinner

I use an electric starter for the coals. So it's not much of a hassle starting them. I just got tired of the setup and cleanup with the charcoal. I'm not knocking it at all because i have made many an awesome meal on charcoal and wood in the smoker. I just wanted to try out the gas. To be honest sometimes I actually like to take as long as possible to start the grill and cook the food (and down a bunch of beers), I find it very relaxing. Just wanted to try something new and so far I have cooked very good burgers, chicken and shrimp on the gas grill. Ribs and steaks will be the real test though.
