I've been married for almost 6 years and the wife is just recently starting to not double check everything I tell her (about mechanical things) with her dad. There were a few times were she asked her dad something and when he answered she says oh that's what Mike said but I wanted to double check.
He finally started asking her why she didn't just listen to me in the first place.

You should take her dad aside, and calmly tell him that he is a fuckin idiot and should learn a thing or 2 before he kills his daughter.

I check the pressures when the tires are cool. (preferrably in the mornings or after the car hasnt been driven for a few hours and not in the sunlight)
Inflate to the pressures stamped in the door jamb.
Good to go!
The pressures in the door jamb are cool pressures, the tires will go above those recommended cool pressures when the tire gets warmer.

i think we have different messages going on here...
im not saying jump when daddy says, im saying dont question him if he knows what hes talking about, like i said in my case...cars. every guy i dated that questioned my dad dealin with something mechanical on a vehicle was proven wrong
but i agree girls can be like TOTALLY to the hip of their parents, some independant thinking is always good

who gives a shit. point is is that unless you are either her father or her husband you're wrong. in fact just get rid of the second option...unless you are her father you'll be wrong...even after you're married daddy is still right.

What type of car? Each vehicle and type of tire is different. I base tire pressure on the type of use and wear patterns. A new prius, for example, despite what the manufacturer recommends, achieves better tire wear with 44 front and 42 rear... Also, tire pressures are calibrated when cold, based on the tire recommendation, not the sticker on the door. The door sticker is simply a recommended pressure which is a good starting point to detrmine what the actual pressure should be.
Also, tire pressure should always be taken with the same pressure gauge. A gauge that works will read true to itself but not other gauges. Many are off by a couple of pounds. I know this from a great deal of experience at the race track as my slicks I run at 14.5 pounds and the front skinnies I keep at 45 pounds for track use. I always use my own gaige.2002 Street ET Champion New England Dragway

when the center tread on the tires is completely worn out and the outside tread is like new you get to do the "i told you so" dance, and she (her father)gets to buy a new set of tires.

Always set them to whats on the door, the number on the sidewall is the maximum the tire will hold before you RISK a blowout. On average most passenger car tires take about 30 lbs. The highest I set any passenger car or light truck/suv is 35. No reason to set them any higher. However 250/2500 series trucks and higher often require 50 to 80 psi. They have a E load range tire.

in addition, tires on a common sedan filled to 44 lbs are gonna have a really hard ride.

Whenever she asks you to car work from now on (Not that checking tire pressure is really work), politely decline and ask why you should do it if her father is the car god.

I agree on this. Reasons like this are the precise reason I will not work on a girls car anymore unless im getting paid. Its always aggravation. I only do sidework for my buds and family and thats it. Everytime I've ever went out of my way to help some chick with a car problem I regretted it completely.

I set my tyres at 37lbs/sq in.
Yes there is a very slight increase in tyre pressure - very slight when starting with a higher cold pressure.
Tyre pressure increase usually arises because of tread and sidewall flex at the area in contact with the road surface.
A tyre is a "pressure vessel" and if it has high pressure (cold) to start with, there is less wall and tread flex and thus less distortion therefore less heat build up.
Also, the tyre is more stable at higher pressure, particularly when doing a swerve test. There is less lateral movement between the wheel (rim) and surface of the road because the higher pressure enables the tyre to maintain its proper shape.
There is also better wear across a tyre's tread surface at higher pressures because it is able to maintain its shape across the two shoulders and the crown.
IIRC, a tyre starting at 26 lbs/sq in grows an inch in diameter at the crown at 90 mph. That is because the less pressure enable the Tyre to distort its shape too easily.

there both right, you let the psi down to about 30-35 for straight aways for speed but for better gas and turns you want them up, depends what she is asking so both could be right

Over inflation will cause a bad ride and choppiness in the tread which will make the ride worse. Its going to take more then even 60 PSI to blow a tire. although anything is possible.
