Gas Cap Issues.............
Well has anyone had issues with the wonderful plastic gas cap not latching properly.............?
I'll tell you first hand it throws a code and pops the check engine light on when the system does a self pressure test on the tank. Getting ready to call the stealerships to check pricing and availability.
I might just drill a couple small holes through the top and place a couple short course sheet metal screws through the plastic cover. It seems as if the ratcheting mechanism is just clutching instead of twisting.Don't be afraid of the bottle!!! Be afraid of your tune!!!

I know there was on the 04's I never got one (letter) about my 05 nor did I have any issues. This is a customers 06 with 23,000 on it. So if they are still junk on 06 why buy another one at the dealer.
I just ended up getting a Stant part #11841. It was $16 @ Checkers.
The dealership was about the same price with my discount $14.37. The GM part # 10372866 .
I figured the Stant would be a better upgrade. I have had their caps on many cars over the years and Never had any issues.

The Pontiac dealer here has replaced all the 04/05/and 06 gas caps at no charge. There is a TSB out on it....

Yellowjacket- 2004 Pontiac GTO M6
WARNING! What ever you do, don't make the same mistake I did. When mine started giving me problems, I wrapped my fingertips down around the bottom of the cap and tried to muscle it on and sliced the hell out of my fingers... the rounded metal lip is extremely sharp!!!
I got the letter after I had already replaced mine from O'reilys... approx. 7 bux as I recall.

I had the trouble with the gas cap as well, I had it replaced and had the same problem, until I foundout what was wrong. when putting the cap on I was pushing down. DON'T!!! Just place it and turn, it will go on perfectly. Ron

metallic burgandy- '00Pont Grand PrixGT
I have a 2000 Grand Prix with the 3800 and just replaced the second AZ cap. So counting the factory unit, the car has had 4 caps total now. Last one lasted about 7 months. AutoZone's may be cheap or something, but just doesn't seem right that it is such an issue

Bringing this back up... my car threw code P0455, gross leak or something like that. Replaced the gas cap about 20 miles ago, and was wondering about how long should it take for the SES light to turn off? My car needs inspection and this is the only thing stopping me from passing. IIRC the light will go off by itself for certain problems, but other problems can have it needed to be reset by a mechanic.
